    Bring on the Kirkaldy Bruiser!

    SON OF GRIDKNOCKER
    By SON OF GRIDKNOCKER,

THEY'VE been burning the midnight oil in Labour Party HQ these last few weeks. They're trying to fathom out a Stop Corbyn strategy. While the three other Labour Leader hopefuls (Yvette Cooper, Andy Burnham and the one who never says anything) remain frozen like rabbits in a car's headlights, Harriet Harperson is trying womanfully to find a winning formula which will see off the Islington Leftie Upstart.

Persuading Polly Toynbee to pen a Guardian piece entitled "If I was a dreamer, I'd vote left of Corbyn" went down like a lead baloon. And getting shadow chancellor Chris Leslie to throw his toys out of the pram, merely evinced the general public response: "Err, who's Chris Leslie?" Likewise Alan 'Postie' Johnson's "I'm backing Yvette" statement only had another 5000 people climbing on the Corbyn bandwagon.

It was 2.00a.m. when Ms Harman thumped the table, awakening the slumbering cohorts. "I've got it! We bring in Gordon! Remember how he turned round the Scottish referendum at the last minute?"

"Brilliant!" cried the wet-behind-the-ears wannabies, anxious to get home to bed. "Let's get Mandy to handle the pr!"

"Get me Gordon on the phone!" commanded She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed. "Anyone know where he is?"

"He's on a wilderness trek in the Cairngorms with Sarah."

Thus the scene is now set for a gruelling 15-round pugilistic onslaught, between the nimble-footed man affectionalely referred to by his messianic followers as 'JC' and the gurning Kirkaldy Bruiser. And with Len McLusky as JC's manager and seconds being provided by ASLEF, UNISON, UNITE and the Fire Brigade, it has all the ingredients of being a Rumble in the Westminster Jungle.

Many of people who view or post on Hereford Voice will know of people who have spent time in Bromyard Hospital convalescing.   Sadly this is being threatened with closure.  There is a petition if anybody feels strongly about this pending closure.  There is also a meeting at Bromyard tonight.

Great Western Way - Do You Feel Safe Along Here?

    Colin James
    By Colin James,

Back in the summer of 2010, I requested more lighting and more police patrols along the GWW Hereford as a few people had expressed how scary it was walking home.

Councillor Adrian Bridges said this a year later in November 2011:

    Quote

I raised the garage issue to Herefordshire Housing. Paul Kennedy has written back to me personally and confirmed that Herefordshire Housing has committed £340,000 in next years budget. This will ensure as necessary they will upgrade and rapair the garages / other building and if required demolish any of these that are considered unsafe.

We are now half way through 2013??? So was this followed up Mr Bridges? I asked Adrain again over a year later from the very same discussion:

    Quote

We are almost at the end of 2012 now Adrian, the assurances you gave above have not emerged so far with only a few months left in this years budget...

NOTHING! Was ever done and we have seen several attacks over the past months, I notice that the Hereford Times has run a feature this week to highlight this issue once again and have suggested that most people still feel safe in Hereford in this article as you will see from the large amount of comments on the HT website this is not what is being said.

    RouteMaster Bus

    Slim
    By Slim,

Wandering through the Old Market yesterday and I espied an old London Bus, (can't really miss it).  What is it doing in Hereford? Advertising somewhere or the latest addition to Yeoman's plans to run all the bus routes in Hereford!

67% Parking Charge Increase Proposal - Merton Meadow

    Colin James
    By Colin James,

From the letters page in the HT:

WELL done, Herefordshire Council, another brilliant decision with the proposal to raise the Merton Meadow parking charge with a whopping 67% increase from £3 to £5 per day (On-street parking charges on way? Hereford Times, July 30).

I would accept an increase is due, but I think an increase of 50p, taking the charge to £3.50 per day, would be acceptable.

Who in Hereford (councillors excepted) could afford to pay £5 per day? I would hazard a guess those requiring full-day parking Monday to Friday are mainly city centre workers, many of whom are on minimum wage levels of pay and for whom such a charge would have a devastating effect on already overstretched incomes.

We are a county town where, in many instances, public transport is not an option, leaving most people no choice but to travel by car. Which leads to another aspect, that of attracting visitors/shoppers to the city’s both old and new shopping centres.

If the aim is to entice visitors to linger and part with their cash, I doubt a £5 charge would prove much of an incentive or encouragement.

    Airline Fat Tax

    Paul Jones
    By Paul Jones,

I know this is a bit random but I actually agree with Katie Hopkins for once.

    post-109-0-11019700-1440040967.jpg

PASSENGERS should be weighed along with their luggage when they check in and slugged with an extra fee if deemed too hefty. That’s according to British TV personality and columnist Katie Hopkins, who made the controversial comments in a sneak preview of her new show If Katie Hopkins Ruled The World.

She made her case for a “fat tax†very untactfully, telling the audience: “One of the things that is closest to my heart is a fat tax for fat flyers.“I have to pay for my 20 kilograms of luggage on cheap airlines when some fat chubster just up the aisle from me, doesn’t have to pay anything to get on-board that plane when quite clearly they are carrying more cumulative luggage and I think when you check in, you should weigh in.

I have witnessed many times people being told that you have 3kg too much weight in this bag, so you now need to take that out and place it in the other bag, which can all be very humiliating. It does not matter that the next person in the queue could be 10 stones heavier than you as long as their bag is not overweight then thats fine. The airline have to increase the amount of fuel they load according to the weight that they carry.

    Litter picking at Yazor brook

    manse1968
    By manse1968,

There has been a lot of rubbish and broken glass along both sides of the Yazor brook at Moor Farm. This has caused quite a lot of distress for residents and dog walkers. On 20th August at 6pm there will be a litter pick along the brook. This I know will not resolve the issue but it is a start. I will continue to work with residents to try to resolve this for the future.

If you would like to help with the litter pick which should take about an hour then feel free to attend. We will meet in the car park at the Range at 5.45pm, all equipment will be provided

    Hope to see you there.

    Cllr Mansell

    Advertising Mess in the City

    Paul Neades
    By Paul Neades,

Banners on railings around the city, signs on every lamppost and traffic light. Where does this stop, where is the enforcement? I'm fed up of Hereford looking like a mess as you walk or drive through.

Surly all this advertising which tendermounts to fly posting has to be addressed and stopped. Business owners should be fined and organisations brought to task that litter our city with advertising.

    What are your thoughts?

    Hopper buses are coming back

    ragwert
    By ragwert,

Have heard that Yeomans have bought quite a few hopper type buses.
    Anyone seen one yet?

    Traffic cone family,Perceverance Road

    ragwert
    By ragwert,

Anyone who travels up & down Perseverance Road in the last four years will have seen these cones that have made a home next to the 2nd hand car dealers.
Why they are there and who puts new ones back in the same place when they get mown down is a complete mystery to me.
There are slight depressions around the drains but nothing that warrants traffic cones.
Also they have been there for more than four years so if there was a problem around these drains surly it should of been fixed by now.

Hereford FC in Midland Football League for the 2015/16

    Colin James
    By Colin James,

Just announced on the Hereford Football Club Website

    Hereford_FC_(2015).png

It has this afternoon been confirmed that Hereford FC will be entered into the Midland Football League for the 2015/16 season.

This means the club will be starting at Step 5 of the National League football pyramid.

Speaking about this news, Hereford FC Chairman, Jon Hale, said:

‘We always knew we were likely to be placed at Step 5, as Football Association guidance suggested we would have to start two divisions below the last league Hereford United played in.

‘As a club we will look forward to making new friends in the Midland Football League and clearly the local derby fixtures against Westfields will be hugely interesting.

‘Now we have clarity about the league we’ll be playing in, we can really focus on all the challenges that lie ahead of us. However, I know I speak on behalf of everyone at the club when I say these are challenges we are really looking forward to.

‘There is little doubt that as a club we have a quite a journey ahead of us and I think it will be an adventure that supporters can really enjoy.

‘I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that the day we can start thinking more about football is one I’m really looking forward to, and I feel today’s announcement is bringing that exciting day even closer.’

    Newton Farm Election - 13 August 2015

    Adrian Bridges
    By Adrian Bridges,

I came across this tonight on Herefordshire Councils website and was quite surprised that there is an election in Newton Farm for the Hereford City Parish.

Looking back too May I see that Glenda Powell and Phil Edwards were elected, can someone shed some light as to why we now have an election when surly the seats were taken up in May by the two successful candidates?

I would find it quite difficult to say the least that one of the successful candidates from the May election did not take up their seat as this will now cost Hereford City Council many thousands of £'s to have a contested by-election when this money could have been spent in the local community.

    Balfour Beatty rejects Carillion takeover

    twowheelsgood
    By twowheelsgood,

It's only a matter of time before this happens, following which there will be cost cutting and dumping of unprofitable departments, with 'Living Places' no doubt first in line. And then where will be ? It'll be the Jarvis/Amey stitch up all over again. Or do the sensible (and cheapest) thing and revert to direct labour?

    http://www.adjacentgovernment.co.uk/housing-building-construction-planning-news/balfour-rejects-carillion-takeover/

Carillion by the way are currently claiming £1.3m compensation from Edinburgh City Council after bad weather prevented the Niddrie Burn Restoration Project from completing on time … yes - builder sues council for allowing bad weather.
