Hereford Council saving up for the ring road!

    megilleland
    By megilleland,

    From today's Daily Telegraph:

"Authorities in England and Wales saw their surplus from parking rise to £511.6 million in 2010-11 from £489.4 million a year earlier, according to an analysis of local authority accounts by the RAC Foundation.

Local authorities were warned by Mike Penning, the road safety minister, last year to stop treating motorists as an easy target to raise funds.

Town halls are supposed to use their powers to control parking to improve traffic flow and prevent gridlock on their streets.

They are prohibited from using these powers to bolster their income. However, many councils seek to get round this by earmarking the cash raised for other transport projects.

Westminster came top with a surplus of £38,196,000!

Herefordshire Council was listed at 148 out of 371 authorities with a surplus revenue of £863,000 from parking charges. How long would it take to pay for a ring road at this rate.

    Mis-selling by Hereford independent store?

    adamski
    By adamski,

A request to my fellow members. Has anyone purchased domestic white goods from an independent Hereford store with the benefit of a "free for life" labour offer?

I'm not naming names at this stage, and there is more than one store making such an offer in our city, so please don't draw any conclusions as yet.

I'm just wanting feedback from other members who may have experienced the same issues as me.

I've always tried to support local independents, even if it means paying a little more.

Furthermore, I've praised these retailers to family and friends, and posted positive reviews online.

However, over the last few months, I've formed the opinion that I've been stitched up. I've written on several occasions directly to the retailer and asked them to explain, all to no avail.

    Briefly, this is what happened.

    Washing machine broke.

    Needed new bearing.

Quoted nearly £300 for the part!

Told, don't bother trying to order it yourself on the internet, it won't work.

Not being one for doing as I'm told, ordered part on internet for under £30 and fitted it myself (took me, as a novice, over five hours!!!).

Machine working well nearly five months later!

Let me know if you've had similar experiences please. I think I've been misled.

    Thanks all in anticipation.

    The Matabeau Hereford

    Denise Lloyd
    By Denise Lloyd,

They are saying over on Facebook that The Matabeau Hereford has today shut up shop.  Speculation is that they have gone bankrupt.  This I find incredibly sad it was the one cafe that I would have a cup of coffee in(they served coffee in a cup and saucer!) and their food was always pretty good.  Great shame.

The Chadds staff used to congregate there in the morning prior to going to work - sad old times

    The Spread Eagle

    Denise Lloyd
    By Denise Lloyd,

Saw this on Facebook very surprised none of the city dwellers on here have picked up on this

The Spread Eagle is to open up as a Fish & Chip bar but we've heard reports that people who had bookings for Christmas meals at the Spread Eagle haven't been contacted despite menus being sent out.

UPDATE: The Spread Eagle is now a fish and chip bar. The current owners decided on a new venture. Customers who booked Christmas lunches however weren't notified of the likely change. We are led to believe this will happen over the coming days as the bar is expected to still serve a Christmas menu.

Even more surprised that they can get away with that colour of paint is it really in keeping with the rest of the street?

The Spread Eagle in #Hereford is to become a fish and chip bar. What do you think of the change?

    Colin James
    By Colin James,

On April 15th last year there was this accident on the Asda (A465) junction Belmont Road Hereford in which a cattle trailer carrying sheep overturned, killing all 20 sheep onboard.

I took this photograph this morning and as you can see, we are 9 months on and NOTHING appears to have been done with regard to replacing the broken lights?? How long does it take to put things back as they were?

Mill Street has been closed due to residents saying that a tree on Castle Green side was slanting after

    Storm Doris.
I don't know who in Mill Street would report this tree as I remember it being on the same slant some 40 years ago

    Business rates revaluation 2017

    megilleland
    By megilleland,
Following on from the Matabeau topic and its possible effect on the independent trader and local shopping scene.

    (extracts from article)

Starbucks is to open its fourth coffee shop on one street - just 300 yards from an independent coffee shop set to be ‘bled dry’ by the business rates overhaul.

The coffee giant yesterday unveiled plans to open its fifteenth store in Cardiff, and its fourth along the city’s busy Queen Street – the most on any one street in Britain.

The four Starbucks shops will be just 350 yards apart, within a five minute walk of each other.

Yesterday Charlotte Barker, the owner of neighbouring Coffee Barker, condemned the announcement as an example of the Government’s failure to stick up for smaller traders in the face of punishing rate hikes.

Starbucks ran into a tax controversy in the UK in 2012 when it was accused of paying no tax on sales of £1.2bn in this country over the previous three years.

Mrs Barker said it was ‘heartbreaking’ that multi-national companies ‘seem to get away with murder in their tax bill’ while smaller businesses like hers are forced to the wall.

‘We are waiting to hear how big our rate rises will be. But it could tip people like us over the edge. The taxman already gets 20 per cent VAT, PAYE and income tax from us along with the rate rises.

‘I’m sure people look at my shop and think it is a dream to run that. But, believe me, it is an uphill battle every day and the Government are making it even more difficult for small traders.

Dr Eleri Rosier, a senior lecturer in marketing at Cardiff Business School, told how a number of vacant units and short-lived discount shops along the street is a symptom of high-rental costs.

She said: ‘They move in to quickly make their money and then leave. We have lots of empty units that can be really off-putting. Obviously seeing everything closed isn’t the most attractive.’

MPs fear independent shops be wiped out from Britain’s high streets under planned rate hikes from April. It is feared the larger, multi-national companies will stay because they can easily afford to stay open.

I am sure we are going to hear a lot more of this from small businesses.

Herefordshire Heroes wanted for Great British Spring Clean

    megilleland
    By megilleland,
Herefordshire Council Newsroom: 21 February 2017

Herefordshire Council is backing a campaign to get half a million people out and about cleaning up their local communities throughout March 2017.

The brand new Great British Spring Clean will roll out for the first time in 2017, with a view to it becoming an annual event helping to bring people together and clean up the country.

TV wildlife presenter and children’s favourite Steve Backshall is lending his support to the campaign, which is backed by the key anti-litter charities including Keep Britain Tidy, Keep Wales Tidy, Keep Scotland Beautiful, Marine Conservation Society and Surfers Against Sewage.

Many other organisations will also be supporting the clean up including the Women’s Institute, the National Trust and the RSPCA, as well as a range of businesses. Local company The Helping Hand Company from Ledbury are the official supporters of the campaign.

Herefordshire Council will be encouraging and supporting groups and individuals who want to ‘do their bit’ to help clear up the litter that blights our streets, parks, roads and beautiful countryside.

Councillor Rone, Cabinet member for Transport and Roads, and the instigator of the ‘Stop the Drop’ campaign, from Herefordshire Council said:

‘We are delighted to be supporting the Great British Spring Clean and we encourage as many groups, individuals and organisations as possible to take part. It will also support our own Stop the Drop litter campaignâ€.

To take part in the campaign and set up your own clean up event visit www.greatbritishspringclean.org.uk, you can also register on our website www.herefordshire.gov.uk/stopthedrop  so you can advertise your event locally and encourage family, friends and neighbours to join in.

As soon as you have registered to organise a litter pick you MUST let Balfour Beatty know by ringing 01432 261800 so they can arrange to collect your bags of litter after your litter pick.

Balfour Beatty also have a limited number of litter packs available that can be borrowed free of charge. The Helping Hand Company are sponsoring the campaign by donating some of these packs.

Litter remains a huge problem across the country, causing harm to the environment and wildlife, with councils in England having to spend over £700 million on street cleaning services every year.  Herefordshire Council spends just over £1 million a year on street cleaning.

Follow  #GBSpringClean for all the latest news.

Let’s all work together to keep Herefordshire beautiful.
