Nigel Farage reprimanded for criticising Baroness Ashton European Parliament, Strasbourg, France, 25.11.2009 Five years ago Nigel Farage complained about her appointment and everything he said made the European Parliament squirm. However Baroness Ashton has gone on to do very nicely and will continue to do so when she stands down at the the end of this year.
  2. Speaking of dog mess I notice that Hereford Heckler is highlighting further crap here: And now the Council want to demolish their offices in Bath Street. Hereford Civic Society committee member Gareth Davies will be on BBC Hereford and Worcester on the Breakfast Show on Monday 3rd March. He has given a passionate interview about the former Bath Street Working Boys’ Home - due to be demolished to make way for a new Fire station. HCS has taken a stance on this. Together with the historic connections this prominent site is not the place for a Fire Station. We are in discussion with the Council which has agreed to consider HCS proposals. Note HCS next meeting: Architects and Craftsmen 1700 - 1930 a survey of those responsible for creating Hereford, by David Whitehead, Historian. Thursday 20th March, Kindle Centre, 7 pm for a 7.30 pm start. 230 years to create Hereford and a few council terms to destroy it.
  3. Robert Francis Kilvert (3 December 1840 – 23 September 1879), always known as Francis, or Frank, was an English clergyman remembered for his diaries reflecting rural life in the 1870s, which were published over fifty years after his death. A John Betjeman BBC television documentary on Kilvert, called Vicar of this Parish, was shown in 1976. This led to Kilvert's Diary being dramatised (18 x 15 minute episodes)[2] on British television between 1977 and 1978, with Timothy Davies in the title role. All episodes survive.
  4. Sure does. Here is another from the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership Draft Strategic Economic Plan. So people in Shropshire won't be coming down here to Hereford for their shopping experience when they can get it locally.
  5. Just quickly filled in this "On Street Parking survey". Seemed a bit inadequate considering the importance of this issue.
  6. Opinions sought about on-street parking in Hereford 26 February 2014 Herefordshire Council News item Shoppers and traders have the opportunity to give their opinion about parking in Hereford city centre as the council commences its review of on-street parking. The Council will be considering a range of options including charging for on street parking, to manage traffic flow into and around the city centre, to reduce congestion and create a safer and more pleasurable place for shoppers within the enhanced retail environment. It will commence consultation with shoppers, traders residents and other interested groups this week and will carry out further consultation on detailed proposals in the summer. The review will aim to support current schemes in the historic core include street de-cluttering through rationalising existing signage, 20mph zones and more cycling facilities. Creating an appropriate parking strategy supports this as the council looks to enable access to the city centre for all whilst seeking to deter any unnecessary car trips where public transport or active transport could provide an alternative. Councillor Price, Cabinet Member Infrastructure said “The review will look at the number of street parking spaces and where they are, how current restrictions control parking and whether they are appropriate. We need to understand how and what changes might better control traffic flow into and around the city centre to reduce congestion whilst supporting businesses and residents. Creating a better environment with less circulating cars and more facilities for cycling, walking and public transport use will be the basis of the next Local Transport Plan (LTP) that is due to commence in 2015. The LTP will include plans which aim to support economic growth, reduce carbon emissions and make journeys easier for people.†The closing date for submission of the questionnaire is 17 March 2014. To complete the online questionnaire please go to www.herefordshire.gov.uk/ParkingReview or call 01432 349530 to request a paper version.

Talking of dictatorships: Local government cabinet system Responsible department: Department for Communities and Local Government "In the year 2000, Tony Blair's government introduced a new Local Government Act. This Act had the effect of focusing far too much power in the hands of a Council Leader and a few of his hand picked colleagues. The practice, know as the Cabinet System, denies the vast majority of elected Councillors on Borough and County Councils to be involved in what are often crucial decisions. The Cabinet System, which is often lucrative for members of the Cabinet, should be disbanded, and British Councils should revert to the democratic system that was in place prior to the year 2000. This would enable all Councillors to participate in the best interest of their constituents". Please sign this UKIP petition to acknowledge your agreement.
  10. BBC H&W News today: How are the council going to find the money for this? This neglect of our highways has being going on for years with the contract money being siphoned off for private organisations and their shareholders.
  11. As we head towards the next council and general elections in May 2015, the current administartive bodies are rushing to get the cash into their tills. Having passed the majority of public services over to their private friends the assets of these public bodies entrusted to us are now in the forefront of a fire sale to get the last coppers from us. The latest deals involve the relocation of the fire station and the Queenswood Country Park and Bodenham Lake nature reserve
  12. Tom Spring (February 22, 1795 – August 20, 1851) was an English bare-knuckle fighter. He was heavyweight champion of England from 1821 until his retirement in 1824. Spring was born at Witchend in Fownhope, Herefordshire.

  15. Hereford hit for 6 at Luton today. Sorry hit for 7 since I last looked!
  16. I see the ramblers have replied in "Have your Say".
  17. Interesting letter from "Have Your Say" in the Hereford Times. Seems to follow along the lines of the hot food debate after hours as discussed here: Any younsters on here with any views? Once musicians get noticed and established they usually leave the area pretty quick ie Ellie Goulding, Mott the Hoople and The Pretenders.
  18. From Hereford Times website: Came back from the city centre last night at 10.15pm and the police were still there. The road is very busy at this junction and with McDonalds on the opposite side of the road to the estate lots of youngsters cross this road daily and risk their lives even though there is a light controlled crossing at the Oval further up Belmont Road. Hope the girl recovers from her injury.
  19. Mott the Hoople - an English rock band with strong R&B roots
  20. Not sure if the title is right for this topic, but a place to add people who you think have put Hereford and the County on the map through their lives, careers and interests. It should be a long list - just add a name and a link for further information if you have it. I will start with John Bulmer as his photography inspired me to think about this. John Bulmer - http://www.johnbulmer.co.uk/photography-biography/Photographer and film maker
  21. Just had a look at the John Bulmer's website and what an amazing career photograhing and film making all over the world. His photographs portraying the working classes in various locations in the North are particularly rivetting. No mention of no jobs, benefits and consumerism just gritting their teeth and getting on with their lives. Imagine having to go the beach to get coal for your family fire and then push it home on your bike (pics 4,5 & 6). Also it is encouraging to see people who leave the county to find work and make their name return to the county. It would be interesting to make a list of local worthies that have gone on to shape their work and careers in putting Hereford and the county in the spotlight from time immemorial. There are plenty of musical links to the county - who else should be on the list. Maybe a link to a name would suffice - I'll start the list here:
  22. Gareth, as an aside are you aware that there is an annual film festival organised here in Herefordshire - Borderlines Film Festival? Also based in Hereford is The Rural Media Company an award-winning charity working throughout the UK that uses film, photography, journalism and graphic design to produce high-impact moving image and new media work which strengthens rural communities and challenges disadvantage. You may get some help or contacts from these two.
  23. This story follows on from the success of "Hereford Sixth Form College students net Oxbridge places." A bit of a damper on educational attainment locally. At least the problem has been recognised and hopefully everyone - staff, parents and students at the school will turn it around quickly. The Ofsted inspection regarding Hereford Academy (10 pages). The Hereford Academy has raised various questions regarding this inspection here on their website.
  24. Hello Denise, I have put a transcript of an interview about this here - scroll down to post 7.
