    Herefordshire housing record

    Hereford Labour
    By Hereford Labour,

Since April 2011, a total of 2,379 new houses have been completed in Herefordshire as against the County Council strategy to build 3,850 new homes. The target figure shows a shortfall of nearly 1,500 homes or just 62% of the Council’s target for new homes were completed during the past six years.

The provision of affordable homes also shows a derisory outcome. Over the past six years just 29% of completed homes were “affordable” according to the Council’s published figures. Under 700 affordable homes in six years, just an average of 115 homes per year.

    Can you help?

    Hereford Labour
    By Hereford Labour,

THE LABOUR party in Hereford is hoping readers may be able to help locate the whereabouts of the Sydney Box Trophy.

The trophy, pictured, was established by the Trades Council in memory of Sydney Box, the first parliamentary Labour candidate for Hereford in 1918 and founder of the Hereford Workers' Union.

It was awarded annually to the best apprentice at Hereford College.

Roger Windsor from Hereford and South Herefordshire Labour Party said: "When the Trades Council disbanded the trophy appeared to go missing and we should like to re-introduce it in connection with the Herefordshire and Ludlow College and the Chamber of Commerce but we cannot find it."

He is appealing for help to find it. Do you know anything about it? If you can help, email roger@mailwindsor.co.uk.

Council award contract for the Weather Forecasting Service

A roads focused weather forecasting service is essential in enabling the council’s response to winter. Not having a forecast provider is not an option if the council is to meet its duty to maintain the highway.

    Decision made:
To award the weather forecasting service for a period of four years at a cost of £17,602 per annum, to support the winter service as described in the council’s winter service plan.

Under section 149 of the Equality Act 2010, the ‘general duty’ on public authorities is set out as follows:

A public authority must, in the exercise of its functions, have due regard to the need to
    (a) eliminate discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct that is prohibited by or under this Act;
    (b) advance equality of opportunity between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it;
    (c) foster good relations between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it.

The weather forecasting service enables the council to fulfil the winter service plan in keeping the network safe for all to use including access to key services such as health, education and for services to access vulnerable people in periods of severe weather.

Signed     Head of Highways and Community Services  Date:   28 August 2018

Plenty of forward weather information on internet. Surely someone appointed in BB can make a decision based on TV or internet forecast and instigate action as necessary.

CHANGE OF USE FROM ASSEMBLY AND LEISURE D2 (SPORTS PAVILION/CHANGING ROOMS) TO NON RESIDENTIAL INSTITUTIONS D1

Current use - Changing and viewing area for outdoor sports used at weekends during the winter and also during the week in the summer months. The building is situated on common land and serves games pitches adjacent. The building has stood since the inter war years and has been extended to the rear in the past with timber frame extensions.

The playing fields are let to the Lads Club. The Lads Club have their own modern changing facilities on adjacent land. The Widemarsh Pavilion building therefore; has not been used as a changing room for circa 2-3 years.

The Council wish to relocate Echo Herefordshire to the Widemarsh Pavilion. Echo Herefordshire provide leisure and social services for people living in Herefordshire with disabilities.

Echo in association with The Green Eyed Monster Company run a service currently operating out of the ground floor at Governors House in Hereford that run workshops for recycling vintage and modern clothing. This provides work placements for adults with mixed abilities Incidental to this Echo operate a vintage and modern fabric shop.

This is a good idea and will stop all the negative things happening in there.

Julian Dunkerton: the man who gave £1m to the People’s Vote campaign

    Quote

    (extract)

The Superdry founder, who rose from humble origins, says he ‘wants to do the right thing’

Julian Dunkerton has already seen the course of his life change dramatically, in his rise from humble market stall trader to fashion mogul with A-list celebrities DJ-ing at his wedding.

Now the multimillionaire founder of the Superdry label hopes to play a role in changing the future of the nation. His £1m gift to the People’s Vote campaign, demanding a new referendum on the terms of Britain’s EU exit, catapults him into a small group of people to make six-figure political donations in Britain. Such is the toxicity of the Brexit debate that finding business figures willing to enter the fray has been a difficult task for those wanting to revisit the decision, making Dunkerton’s public donation a significant moment.

Dunkerton, 53, began his career running a stall in Cheltenham in the 1980s before starting up the Superdry label with the designer James Holder in 2003. The brand’s first shop opened in Covent Garden in London in 2004 and there are now more than 500 outlets in 46 countries. Dunkerton is said to have a personal fortune of £441m.

Dunkertons history reaches back to 1980 when Ivor and Susie Dunkerton made the decision to escape London and buy a small holding in Herefordshire. Their  vision was to turn the land into a viable business opportunity and  they soon realised that cider production was the solution.

    Quote

    (extract)

    How It All Began

At that time Herefordshire  had one company that dominated cider production in the County with very few traditional cider producers despite the vast amount of orchards. Ivor and Susie spotted an opportunity  to make a unique cider whilst operating in a similar fashion to a vineyard  and without using concentrates or chemicals.

During the first years Susie and Ivor did everything from shoveling apples  and loading their original 1930’s Hydraulic Press.  They were eventually  joined by Robert  who quickly became Chief Cider-maker.

    Recent Times

In 2014 Susie and Ivor made the tough decision to step aside and Robert also decided to retire. Their son Julian took on ownership with Bean Benson as Managing Director. in 2017 the business operations were relocated to Gloycestshire, The orchards remain in Herefordshire whilst presing and bottling takes place at our new cidery in Gloucestershire.

Can't say I agree with him. Must have drunk too much cider!
