Six More Months Before Transport Review Completed

A decision paper has been published (16 January 2020) that outlines the work that will take place to assess the Hereford bypass and Southern link road schemes while carrying out a wider review of the transport strategy for Hereford.

Cllr John Harrington, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Transport, said:

“We need to ensure any major transport scheme has a positive impact on the county to address congestion and air quality, and is consistent with the council’s declaration of a climate emergency. We have also broadened the scope of the review to examine alternative transport options in light of the changing national and local policy context. These schemes have a permanent impact upon the environment which last for generations to come, so we must make the right decision.”

“This review gives us the opportunity to consider options that deliver improvements more quickly, including the possibility of an eastern link road and river crossing, removal of traffic lights on key routes, emergency response arrangements to remove breakdowns on the A49, an electric bus fleet for the urban bus network and improvements that provide safer routes to school.”

 

While the review is under way a number of transport and travel schemes will be progressing, including the development of a high quality transport hub at Hereford railway station and improvements to public spaces and facilities for cyclists and pedestrians across the city.

The decision will be taken by Cllr Harrington on Friday 24 January 2020. The review is expected to take around six months to complete and will include consultation with the public and stakeholder organisations.

Talking of easy wins. The development of the transport hub is now really just a joke. It has been talked about since the decision to build the link road. Just how long does it take to design a place where buses, taxis and cycles can interchange? You could almost design it on the back of the proverbial *** packet. Of course we are promised a public consultation on it but I cannot see any actual construction for a couple of years. It's just more money spent (loads for consultants) but no progress. And in the background is that once its built the bus station will be available for development.

We were advised last year that the bypass had bee paused, we have to wait yet another 6 months, frustrating indeed, I did believe that the new council would be more proactive than this tbh

This council got in on a Brexit protest vote and has achieved nothing. The focus on cycling will destroy Hereford business as the congestion will increase and make Hereford even less appealing as destination to shop. Put simply Harrington and his deluded cronies haven’t got a clue what they’re doing apart from pandering to the 5% of Herefordians that like to cycle. They will be remembered for missing the opportunity to move traffic away from the City Centre and destroying any chance for the city to flourish.

Very disappointed with the latest Council - promised so much but have yet to deliver anything in over 12 months. They appear to be frozen in the headlights, with Officers leading them a merry dance in the background. Let's commission some more reports to avoid any decisions!!

Herefordshire Council have been granted permission by Highways England to trial the turning off of the lights on Belmont Island.
