What worries me most is the potential threat to lives. Whoever heard of a city reducing road capacity with new obstacles, on a primary east-west route that is also a major access route for all emergency services: the hospital, police station and fire station? Though I suppose slower traffic may reduce the number of road accidents.
But we can at least be grateful that we will still have two lanes of some shape in each direction, not the single lanes in the plan shown in the Hereford Times in October. Single lanes in Newmarket Street were originally planned on the proviso of an alternative major route, a link road between Edgar Street and the station, - but the likelihood of that being built now seems probably impossible. The idea of a leafy boulevard fronting the OLM in Newmarket Street, with only a few vehicles as in that famous illustration, is just fine. But it’s not going to be like that, is it?

I'm interested in what makes you think that?

Just noticed I have a neg on my post in which the statement is correct LOL
-
Out of place, out of time, doesn't fit into Hereford at all, but the animation almost makes it look good!
Anyway, point is - the webcam link don't work! Any ideas?
Nothing would ever fit for the ioc though would it, and why are you looking at the webcam link?

Biomech, you are so right, and it's not just going to be a few weeks of roadworks. The road works on Newmarket St. will result in a permanent single lane in each direction, not two lanes each way as we have now. Just as reducing the number of lanes on motorways brings traffic suddenly to a standstill, so will it continue to do so here, on into the future, on what is still the main east-west road through the centre of Hereford. Plans for the Link Road were supposed to be in place by now, to compensate, but clearly nothing like that will happen anytime soon. (Big problems with the Link Road plan too, but that's another story.) This Newmarket St. plan, bound to increase traffic congestion significantly, will put people off coming to Hereford even more, and will be the last straw for many more Hereford businesses and shops. The only reason for carrying on and getting it done in January is to provide a smart entrance to the new Old Market shopping area due to open at Easter. It will not have any practical benefit at all. Do they think that a promise of more trees and bike racks on the wider central reservation will make everyone happy? Can this plan be stopped?
Will still be two lanes until link road is built Cloudberry.
Nothing can be started with the link road until all cpo's have been sorted.

No, it’s the 'crossroads' junction itself that is being named Widemarsh Gate.
Ahh.Thanks

Is Widemarsh Street being renamed Widemarsh Gate?

This has nothing to do with ESG and the inclusion of the Canal there
This was a quote to megileland not your post. Not sure why your post was included. The redevelopment at Holmer has nothing to do with the ESG plans
-
the way i remember it the canal restoration was part of the edgar street grid project which was scrapped shorty after the recession hit in 08 and then reincarnated as hereford futures which no longer included the canal.
They tempted us to grant planning permission with the canal and tree lined boulevards linking high town to the train station and then later on stripped it out and just kept the profitable parts.
Some people really do talk crap

And here is the full report on the Appeal Decision. Hearing held on 17the June 2009 by John Worlock, Inspector appointed by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Goverment

If I recall I think the canal aspiration was part of the Egar Street Development but was pulled becuase it was deemed too expensive (may be wrong) which is a real shame as look at other cities where canals / waterays are provided this brings in addtional visitor footfall..
Birmingham / Bristol I do appreciate these are bigger cities.
Councillor Bridges.....Yes you are wrong and you being a Councillor should know.If you don't then find out

It's called common sense, I will remove massive long posts that dominate the front page so don't worry lol
Well you told him,he did not listen and you still kept his post up

Gridknocker, full of new year remorse took a stroll over the newly built greenway bridge, looked over the side, slipped and fell in.Gridknocker came to & wept.He was under the Wye,trapped in the dripping grotto that is King Bobby's lair carpeted by thousands of copies of the Hereford Times with just a table & laptop,a bottle of bells & hessian sack that was filled with Bobby's special things: his teddy, his catapult, his first fishing net & rod, his autograph book full of signatures from local Tory Councillors he had fawned over.Gridknocker wriggled. He was hanging upside down, his legs trapped in an Asda trolly. It hurt, his shorts were wet with his own terror and the slime from Bobby's lair. Bobby limped over to Gridknocker, his long cape dragging on the murky newspaper strewn floor. He looked into Gridknockers terrified little face and spoke, his fetid fish breath sliding up gridknockers nose. "You have failed again Gridknocker,I want my stupid ramblings listed above your lame attempts to be king,I don't want to ever see your fictional stories ever again. Do you understand?" Gridknocker squeezed his eyes and shook his head frantically. He had soiled himself again

Rather than build a University why not convert the empty shops into classrooms turn our town centres into learning hubs? Radical I know but it could work it certainly puts more people in the heart of our city. Our aging population could help by passing on skills and knowledge to our teenagers. I can actually see this working, but I do have some very strange ideas. I like the idea of a learning village, with shops classrooms day care and perhaps some student accommodation. It might attract businesses, selling books, computer equipment, sports equipment, anything students might require all in one place. Just a crazy thought to get people brain storming! But there must be some other use for these empty shops because it's only going to get worse. Could the Council offer an incentive by dropping the rates for the first year? I don't think it's a good idea to simply leave them they are starting to look very scruffy. After all we are in an age of recycling, so let's stop building new and look to recycling our old buildings?
Still think we should have a Uni.This City needs to grow to prosper not let it stagnate as what would have happened if IOC were in charge.
Just think, instead of a cycle path to Rotherwas we would of had a train track
-
Oh what a depressing picture this all paints - exactly what you lot seem to want. Nothing like a good moan.
Lets look to the future - we have major companies, Waitrose and Debenhams, with the confidence to open in the City. They would not have gone elsewhere in the centre as there are no suitable sites.
Yes its a shame that TK Maxx and H & M are moving but they are not closing and change happens. Two shops have just opened in Church Street and two on your list will be reoccupied soon. But nothing should be let to get in the way of your agenda which is to continually talk the city down.
Rant over!
The problem is we have too many shops.20 years ago we bought all our goods etc from 'town' but the building of supermarkets the internet & the recessions have made it impossible for every shop unit to be filled. To be blunt I don't find it depressing at all,the City is still a great place to shop,we just need to find alternative uses for some shop units.
And I agree stop talking this great City of ours down
-
How about adding The Palace Restaurant that was run by Denny on Commercial Road. Empty for years! Looks a total dump. There was some activity there a couple of years ago then nothing!
Heard that someone was caught building Illegally at the back

The k as in K1 K2 K3 stands for kiosks
-
@ 'Ragwert' (sic). The British Retail Consortium's all-England town centre high street vacancy figure is 11.3%. In Hereford's High Town, 20% of all the shop units are currently empty.
That seems to indicate to me that things are worse than the national average. And this is three months before the disastrous impact which established traders in the city will feel when the gruesome Edgar Street Grid is opened!
Grid knocker...It was in the Hereford Times some eight months ago.If you think that the new development will not bring more people into the City to shop then I must be missing something.
And please we live in a City

Hi Will, thanks for the info!
Seasonal units? Could you explain a little more? Are these pitches, rather than units? If they are units, does this mean they will only be trading for part of the year, how does this work then?
How big in terms of floor space are the K1,K2 and K3 units?
Sorry to bombard you with questions, its just when a statement like "all units are let, and have been for quite a while" is made, it would be nice to have a little more detail, to back it up!
Hope your Christmas went well, and your daughter has fully recovered from her accident.
Yeah they are very small units, something like 3x3 mtrs and could be pitches. As I said I have asked someone I know from the PR dept and am waiting for a reply, when I find out will let you know.
There is a white board floor plan on the wall in the Newmarket tavern showing all units bar the K units filled. As to how I know this I'll let your imagination run wild.
Had a great Christmas thanks and daughter has just stopped using crutches and is a lot better.

The Maylords situation is a worry.
Will, I do believe on another thread you replied to a query that all of the units within the OLM are now let, can you tell us who is going to be occupying them?
I find it hard to believe that this didn't herald some sort of fan fare moment, if they are all let, why are they keeping quiet about it??
Colin, did you venture down as far as Bridge Street / King Street??
As of Oct all but the K1 K2 K3 units were let /advanced neg. You will know pretty soon.I have asked Patrick from the PR dept what these small units are for,my guess is they are seasonal units like ice cream parlour etc.
Work to start on Herefords Newmarket Street after Christmas

As a very keen cyclist myself I'd like to see cycle lanes that could easily come to fruition.
The foot paths on both sides of the new bridge & down Victoria St and also down Edgar Street on the left side could be made to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists. We also have a major problem with cyclists not using cycle paths in Hereford.
