  1. I came across The Economist here for the period January 1849 to June 1849 and was fascinated by the amount and cross section of news this periodical covered in its day. And this was before any modern methods of communication came about. Home news, European news, Market news covering the Empire. Makes the HT look like a parish magazine.
  2. All going on-line. The two stores are owned by the same company - Monsoon Accessorize. It was announced on Wednesday morning that the firm had gone into administration, and shortly after that Monsoon's founder, Peter Simon, had bought the business. Peter Simon, Monsoon Accessorize's buyer, said: More locals losing their jobs.
  3. Following on from previous closed topic, parking charges in the news again. You can see why the councils are keen to implement the charges as soon as possible. Overall in 2013/14 councils in England made £667 million from their day to day, on and off street parking operations. After capital charges the net surplus was £549 million. By law any surplus must be used for transport projects. How about free car parking? If people do not drive into Hereford to shop, the traders say it will force many to close and then the council lose the business rates as well - double whammy!
  4. I am relieved to hear this, but where are they? Hadn't realised there were so few. 03/06/2020 - To re-open all public toilets in Herefordshire in two phases where it is safe to do so under Government guidelines ref: 6914 Recommendations Approved Since the national lockdown restrictions have eased in recent weeks, there has been a significant increase of footfall to the county especially to the rural parks and countryside. The lack of facilities is now causing a public health hazard due to the continued closure. Government guidance of 2 metre social distancing, appropriate signage and appropriate hand washing facilities needs to be addressed before the toilets can be re-opened. The council needs to ensure that both users and cleaners can operate safely. Proposal is to open as soon as possible all toilets identified in Phase 1 of appendix 1 where there is direct access off the street. This will include the disabled toilet at the British camp where the radar lock will be replaced with a normal lock to enable visitors to use it. All toilets identified under Phase 2 of appendix 1 will be re-opened as soon as practicable possible after the 15th June 2020. These are cubicle toilets and it is far more difficult to achieve the 2 metre social distancing which makes them safe for users and cleaners. The use of the toilets will be monitored on a weekly basis.   5. I've given up with the HT website unless you subscribe. I bought an HT yesterday, but not weekly. The media because they depend on printed advertising are realising that the golden goose has been killed and are now relying on digitally extracting your data to sell to third parties. This is the future. I posted this comment on HT a few days ago to illustrate this point and I know it is long- it was swiftly removed. But this style of accessing the internet is becoming the norm - pay, accept our terms and conditions or push off. I don't want all these sites poking their noses into my affairs. It was no surprise that the first story I read in the HT was Google being able to track our local movements after extracting information off smartphones. The parlava one goes through to get on a website today is just a joke and this is what the HT want you to agree to by clicking accept and giving all these businesses a piece of your individuality.   8. Agree. Colin can do quite a public service with his Local news from Hereford Voice postings. I can remember the early days of Hereford Voice when is was not unusual for many people to discuss issues affecting the county and their neighbourhood - I wonder where they have all gone?
  9. As you now have to pay for most things in life it comes as no surprise that the Internet is now a cash cow. Companies which once put information and news into the public domain to attract business from potential clients now expect you to pay up front to tell you they can help you. I have always said that before the internet if you were interested in something, you went out of your way to specifically find out more information or purchase the item. Now the marketing pattern has evolved in that these businesses now throw everything at you and you have to waste more time sifting through a tsunami of irrelevant matter which you have no interest in. The pressure to take out subscriptions and register means that we now have to be particularly discerning onto what we log on to. Having gone to so many sites with articles masked out and increased pop up ads, I now only bookmark about half a dozen sites and these will most probably be censored in the coming year as these corporations working with the government regulators/agencies only allow sites to promote their own narratives. It won't be long before we will watching sponsors' programmes with possibly some news or entertainment thrown in. Everything will be presented by celebrities, with political leanings, to inform us what is proper and correct - even the BBC is showing a lack of impartiality through its news reporters and commentators. The BBC is holding interviews for a new Director General, supposedly this coming month, with four applicants on the interview list. I predict that one applicant looks highly likely to get the job - Will Lewis, the outgoing chief executive of the publisher of the Wall Street Journal. In 2010, following his time at the Telegraph, Mr Lewis became group general manager of News Group Newspapers (NGN), the publishers of the News of the World and the Sun, and was there at the height of the phone hacking scandal. Today he is accused of aiding the concealment and destruction of millions of emails relating to phone hacking at the News of the World and the Sun. It is ironic that News Group newspapers is owned by Rupert Murdoch who has shown interest in "taking over" the BBC and Mr Lewis could be the man to help achieve his. Ironically the government also has a say in who can be appointed to the BBC. So maybe we will be subscribing for individual programmes authorised by our government. Mr Lewis, while editor of The Daily Telegraph, did expose the Expenses Scandal in 2009 when a person unknown in a government office copies an entire terabyte of data from a classified computer to a portable hard drive, which is then whisked away from under the noses of colleagues and security alike and ­spirited out of Westminster. That hard drive contains revelatory material – all the expense claims made by 646 members of parliament over the last five years. Two million documents in all, including copies of expense claim forms, handwritten comments scrawled in margins, even attached sticky notes. That the person who gave the files to The Daily Telegraph in 2009 had connections with Hereford shows that there are people who are willing to expose a system, rotten to the core and able to expose the corruption. Whether they do it for purely moral/ethical reasons or for personal gain is not important. In the future we are less likely to get real news and the truth behind government and corporations financial motives. So it does look true that no news is good news.

What's going to happen after Coronavirus Where are we going when Coronavirus fades away and the government has run its course in keeping us at home.The sheer economic disaster coming and affecting everyone is already being discussed by some MPs. One remedy is to impose a one off wealth tax. The idea is that everyone – households and businesses, rich and poor – has to pay a sum equivalent to a chunk of their net assets. This would reverse taxation regimes across the world which tax income far more than the taxation of wealth. Ed Conway, the economics editor at Sky News, writing in the Times, roughly calculates that a one-off 10 percent levy on all household net wealth in the UK would generate over £1 trillion ($1.24 trillion) of revenues. That would be enough to pay off all the costs of Covid-19. It would provide for the NHS for generations and reduce the national debt from wartime levels to something more like normality. The government reduction plans for local authority council funding on the basis that the shortfall can be made up with councils keeping the collection of business rates now looks a dead duck. The desire to give us all an identity card accompanied with a vaccination certificate looks pretty certain. Get ready for all citizens to be given a free smartphone and be fined if not carried on one's person at all times to enable tracking at all times.   17. NHS Herefordshire and Worcestershire CCG established Today the four Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in Herefordshire and Worcestershire merged to become a single organisation. NHS Herefordshire and Worcestershire CCG replaces NHS Herefordshire CCG, NHS Redditch and Bromsgrove CCG, NHS South Worcestershire CCG and NHS Wyre Forest CCG. The merger follows a period of engagement last year with the public, staff, providers and other key stakeholders. It has also been supported by GP practices in Herefordshire and Worcestershire as well as each former CCGs’ Governing Bodies. The merger does not affect any health or care services provided by NHS organisations or local councils across the area, but does reduce the duplication of roles and governance that previously existed behind the scenes within the four organisations. It is also consistent with the expectation set out in the NHS Long Term Plan that there should be more streamlined commissioning arrangements in place across the Herefordshire and Worcestershire footprint. Simon Trickett, Chief Executive of NHS Herefordshire and Worcestershire CCG said: “Clearly we are currently working in some unprecedented and challenging circumstances and our immediate focus remains on responding to the Covid-19 outbreak. Our main priority is, and always will be, our patients and the health and wellbeing of our local population. “Having already set up combined governance and decision-making arrangements across the four CCGs, this merger was the next logical step. We will not lose sight of the different needs of our local communities and we will continue to work with local organisations so that people’s needs, views and experiences remain at the heart of our decision making.” A public engagement exercise conducted across Herefordshire and Worcestershire earlier this year drew support for proposals to bring together the four CCGs, with over half of the respondents in favour of the creation of a single CCG. A subsequent ballot of GP member practices in each of the four CCG areas drew even stronger support, with 94% of practices across Herefordshire and Worcestershire in favour of a merger. Further information, why has this happened? The NHS Long Term Plan presents the opportunity for all NHS organisations to radically change the way in which they work both internally and in partnership with one another to help support the development of Integrated Care Systems. For CCGs, there is an expectation that by April 2021 every Integrated Care System will have more streamlined commissioning arrangements to enable a single set of commissioning decisions at the Integrated Care System level. For Herefordshire and Worcestershire this will involve moving from four CCGs to a leaner, more strategic single CCG for Herefordshire and Worcestershire. In achieving this there will be a change to the role of the CCG itself, shifting from the traditional model of commissioning to one with a greater focus on strategic commissioning on a bigger geographical footprint and making shared decisions with providers on how to best use resources, design services and improve population health. The CCG will also have a role in supporting providers to partner with local government and other community organisations at county or ‘place’ level, and in ensuring that GPs and community services are supported to deliver at their local level. In Herefordshire and Worcestershire this will also include a shift of our valuable clinical leadership resources, realigning them into roles where they will be better able to influence service delivery through developing Primary Care Networks and the new investment being aligned to these groups. Information that was held previously by NHS Herefordshire CCG, NHS Redditch and Bromsgrove CCG, NHS South Worcestershire CCG and NHS Wyre Forest CCG was transferred to NHS Herefordshire and Worcestershire CCG on 1 April 2020. The new CCG is the the new data controller. Any questions about the use of data (including patient data) by the new CCG should be directed to mlcsu.ig@nhs.net. Looks like more financial savings, planned before Coronavirus, will affect the care of everyone in both counties.

  21. No news of the Community Centre that was planned as part of the Oval Development, but appears to have been dropped now all the houses have been built. Was it supposed to be built on the corner opposite the Mermaid where the builders had their compound? This facility would have been useful to this part of Hereford especially as they are going to build more houses on Beattie Avenue.
