In September 2011, Herefordshire Council published the hugely impressive and comprehensive 'Hereford City Defences - a conservation management plan’. Download all three parts from here

    www.herefordshire.gov.uk/downloads/download/53/archaeology_and_the_historic_environment_record

    The study concluded in part;

A recent characterisation study of its historic townscape concluded that Hereford is – measurably and objectively – one of the best-preserved major historic cities anywhere in England, with only one minor street added within the walls since the Middle Ages (Herefordshire Archaeology report 266, 2010).

The city walls are an integral part of that historic townscape and any enhancement of them will add materially to the historic character of the city as a whole.

A number of simple measures are outlined in this plan to do just that, without the necessity for any capital-intensive programmes of works. Properly maintained, made more accessible, displayed and interpreted within an improved setting and properly promoted, the city walls can play a leading role in a broader campaign of heritage-led regeneration.

Immediate priorities for the period 2011-2014:

These are essentially either urgent actions to address specific issues, or are actions that should serve to focus activity in subsequent years.

    • ï‚·  Establish a permanent programme for routine maintenance

    • ï‚·  Undertake a review of the spatial scope of current statutory designation provision and in particular the extent of scheduling

    • ï‚·  Resolve issues concerning the interface between the planned Retail Quarter and the city walls (policy proposal 1.3, above

    • ï‚·  Continue remedial work (1) on recent vegetation re-growth and (2), on failed structural elements and unstable masonry in the Greyfriars Surgery/Black Lion area (see 2.4 and 2.5, above)

    • ï‚·  Develop and carry out a project to better record and understand, and restore one or both surviving bastions and improve public access and information (see 4.1, 5.1, 6.1, above)

    • ï‚·  Develop an interpretation strategy, linked to other city-centre initiatives, for example streetscape re-design and enhancement

    • ï‚·  Develop a floodlighting and display strategy to improve the setting of the walls and their display

    • ï‚·  Encourage other bodies to bring develop proposals for the enhancement of the monuments. At the time of writing (September 2011) Hereford Civic Society is developing a strategy to distinguish the developmental priorities for the period 2012-2026.

I think it is fair to say that none of the immediate priorities have been implemented 5 years after they were highlighted.

Why oh why do we have such a lamentable Council?

Good information but all of this is in the first post I think, still nothing wrong with posting it again to make sure :)

  2. I hear from a very reliable source this evening that the reason that the duck pond was always kept so clean years ago was that the river water was pumped through it, keeping a nice steady flow and stopping it becoming stagnant as it is now. The pump house is located at the bottom turret next to the Victoria Bridge, I know this because my source's relative used to operate it. Over the years we have gone from the Council doing the maintenance to Amey and now Balfour Beattie and we believe somewhere along the line this pump has been forgotten or had possibly stopped working and has never been maintained.

I took these photographs this evening of the location.

Ah, this is interesting, you certainly have done your homework, Colin. It does make complete sense

Unfortunately, we never quite managed a full year...

One of the posts at the back of the retail park was damaged by a lorry searier this yeaar and has not been repaired, also the store mangers/supervisors locked the gates for about the forst 3 weeks and the no longer bother, this is the result...

I collected my mrs from work at the retail park last night and we saw several young drivers pulling onto the site and parking and I said to her then, I wonder how much litter we will see in the morning...

This is the damaged post at the back of the retail park

What is the point of installing these gates if they never close them?

I cannot belive that people are that lazy that they do not put their own rubiish in the bins, it rally annoys me, besides, they should be on this park at night anyway.

  4. I didn't single out any HV comments, but there is one rather distasteful comment further up the list...

And, actually, Yes.  It is okay then.  If drivers are unable to pass by some woman camped out on a roundabout without crashing into each other then they shouldn't be on the road quite honestly.  The fact that no accidents happened really goes to show that it wasn't actually that much of a distraction after all.  No, she shouldn't really have been there, but she was and yet still nothing bad happened.

What logic! ha ha unbelievable, okay the local lads run across the train line at Redhill everyday backwards and forwards, they are scrumping in the woods, they have been doing this for a month now without a single accident, not one! Even though people are telling them this is dangerous and an accident just waiting to happen, they still continue, perhaps the Police should issue a statement advising the train drivers to be more observant when approaching this junction. (scratches his head in dismay)

  5. So...  She's moved on...

She was there for what?  Three weeks or so?

And there was a constant barrage of "It's an accident waiting to happen!" from all the doom-mongers, not just here, but on the HT and Facebook too.

So...  How many accidents did she actually cause then?  Not one?  Can we all stop being so pessimistic in future?  Please?

For the record, I didn't agree with what she was doing, I think she contradicts her reasons for all her actions far too often quite honestly, and I think it was, in the main, just a "look at me" exercise.  But, that said, some of the things people have posted about her are quite awful and there are some people who should take a long look at themselves and their attitudes to others.  We are all just a few bad decisions or unlucky periods away from ending up like her.

I do not believe anyone from HV posted anything that bad about her? And because she never caused an accident that's okay then? What a load of crap! She was a pain in the back side and most people agree. Like you said, what was she there for? Nice to see all the rubbish she kindly left behind for someone else to clean up, best not mention that though eh

  6. Estimates put the number of staff employed chasing fraudulent claims at ten times the amount chasing tax dodgers. Does that make any sense to you?

So what is the answer, let them just get away with it? If we applied this same logic to the police costs involved in chasing people who have committed smaller crimes, we would just tell the police not to bother? Does that makes any sense to you?

  7. Good to read your thoughts, Bobby.

I discussed this thread with my brother in law - who hails from Poland. He is old enough to remember life pre 1989. His take is that the disabled population is hidden. He says that unless you are in a large town/city, disabled access - such as dropped kerbs, ramps etc. - is woefully inadequate, and many people with physical disabilities can be prisoners in their own homes. He tells me that although attitudes towards the disabled are changing - and he notes that those with learning disabilities in particular, can be treated in a pretty dismal way - there is still a long way to go.

We discussed at length, those horrific images which appeared on our TV screens not that long ago, of orphanages in Romania, where children born with a disability were tied to cot rails and more or less left. There was no point in crying - they had learnt that all too often, nobody came to comfort them.

There are countries where the disabled are not seen as equal. Those countries have and are making progress in the right direction, but it will be some time before disability rights are where they should be.

To those who view holders of blue badges 'scammers' or seem to think that the majority of those in receipt of disability benefits in the UK are playing the system, I'd put money on the fact that those people would happily hand back those badges/benefits for a life that hasn't been shaped by disability and tainted by people's prejudices towards them.

I bet you have never been to either Poland or Romania, Poland is not a poor country, in fact their national debt is far less than that of the UK.

I think that the point being made here is not about the GEUINE disabled people but more about people who are playing the system and if you think there are not many then you are very naive. I worked in the DHSS for many years and I saw it all.

  8. If someone gets killed, she will of achieved her maximum effect, at least then she will have a roof over her head that she won't be able to refuse, its called prison.  :Hmm:

I have never seen anything like it, an absolute pi*% take, this idiot should be removed from the roundabout, I am surprised she is still there.

  9. I have read both topics and have to agree, less or no benefits and you appear to have less disabled people, strange that.

Less claiming yes, thats what happens when a country like the UK just hands out benefits without too much checking and then when the government want to do an overhaul of disabled benefits, guess what, they don't like it and kick off! I am really not at all surprised that you didn't see anyone on a mobility scooter on your recent trip. It is no wonder our country is in such a state, even fat people are classed as disabled now, what is that all about?

  10. Just read this on the HT website, no smoke without fire.

I haven't had time to scan through all of the comments but the consensus is clear. I know of Sam and have done for many years. She is a difficult individual with a host of personal issues ranging from substance abuse to crime and so forth... No surprise to anyone who knows her that social services tried to have her children stay with her but she repeatedly went of the rails and blew every opportunity. She had a lovely house in Lower Bullinghan for a few years and a car bought for her, and with benefits a plenty, but she is a self destructive personality and in my opinion has burnt her bridges with social services, housing and NHS assistance.

The news story doesn't and can't reflect the truth of her plight and I do feel a little sorry for her but a victim she is not. She is obviously 'camping out on da roundabout' in an attempt to gain public sympathy as a mechanism to obtain accommodation she isn't entitled to and money she will spend on anything but the essentials. As for her being a self employed hairdresser that is a crock... She owns a pair of scissors and a delusion of hairdressing abilities.

She needs shifting but I don't know where and as for her kids they are far far better off being elsewhere, permanently.

  11. And the hate just keeps on coming from some quarters doesn't it?

Tell me, just what is this "elephant in the room" which has been alluded to?

On second thoughts - don't bother. I don't think I could stomach the response.

You are more than happy to highlight my comment on the elephant but you make no reference to the other comments with reference to the thousands of flood victims I notice? I bet you would of jumped on that one if they had been refugees hmm?

  12. @bobby47 (...these same selfish people...(are) worrying about their investment).

Of course they are! When you've stumped up £2,500 pcm, you certainly don't want the water in the luxury block's swimming pool to be CONTAMINATED by Syrian refugee kids!

    I wouldn't either!

That's it keep attacking wealthy people, it's like they have done something wrong being successful! They never suggested housing all the people from the floods back last year in expensive properties, so whats the difference here then? other than the pink elephant in the room.

This was an absolute terrible tragedy, I think everyone acknowledges this but if I am totally honest here, (I am sure I will get slated but hey ho) the days following this horrendous fire which was caused by a faulty Hotpoint fridge we saw the PM visit twice, we saw Jeremy Corbyn visit, we then had other various MP's and celebrities turning up, mind you, Bono and that scruffy t w a t Geldolf never arrived, even though they offered their homes to refugees a few years back, that never developed into anything either than the usual hot air! Oh let's not forget the Queen visited along with Prince WIlliam and yes all this to show support at this sad time for these people but I don't remember seeing all of these people turning up after the London Bridge or Manchester Attacks?

If this were me or you we wouldn't get this support. Are ALL of these people not insured at all? Why have the insurance companies not got people on the ground? Perhaps they have but there is too much finger pointing in my opinion.

  13. This is also true but she was in charge of the home office for a very long time. The country can't face or stomach another election but somehow we must try and regain the middle ground rather than have extremely left or right polarized views. Better diplomacy can be achieved there and better co-existence. We all have to give a little otherwise it's a dark road.

    I agree.
