Their Ernest Jones brand is round the corner selling the higher end/more profitable stuff anyway. Their assistants have to sell/upsell £xxx worth of goods per day or they get disciplined.

If something is more 'profitable' at Ernest Jones then you can guarantee that it's cheaper on the web. Unless it's an 'exclusive' unbeatable deal. People without knowledge of, or access to, the internet are dying off so these high street type jewellers are gonna continue to suffer.

  2. Had one Candidate knocking at my door so far (College Ward). Brian Wilcox. I told him he was not getting my vote under any circumstances. I think his visit was on, or about, 15.04.19. He turns up every four years in my street! I also told him that I thought he would get elected. We agreed to disagree over the topics I wanted to discuss! I mainly wanted to talk about the Tories failing to deliver Brexit (off topic) and the Blueschool Street overspend fiasco. I may very well abstain from the Local Elections myself. No independent candidate has bothered to speak to me in person. Labour is obviously a no go area for a vote because the Candidate is running under a National Leader who is a Marxist lunatic. A total Danger to the UK.

  3. Cambo ..... I've never voted in Euro Elections. I know they are Regional, as far as the UK is concerned. I have gone out of my way to avoid voting in that vote. If there is no Brexit Party Candidate in my voting area then I won't vote in the EU Election. But, of course, there might not be a vote ......

  4. I see Kath Hey is standing for my ward (College). She seems to be carpetbagging (loose interpretation) across town. She obviously doesn't fancy standing for Aylestone or Tupsley! Will she knock on my door? Or ring my bell? ~ that is not an innuendo by the way! She will have to make a visit to my house to even have a sniff of attracting my vote. If she visits (and I'm absent) that counts!

Soon there will be no shops and then wait for the moaning, personally, I do not think change of use of many if these shops should be granted, it is a shopping retail area, there are plenty of places around for flats, this will end up being bedsits, you mark my words

The evidence seems to suggest we have too many shops. We either have empty shops or they are turned into a barbers or charity shop. In contrast we have a housing crisis. So I'm never gonna put up too much of an argument to defend change of use planning applications in most circumstances.

  6. That newsagents (closed for some time) has a very low ceiling. It is not very fit, in it's current state, to reopen as a shop. I would sooner it was turned in to housing as opposed to it opening up as a dodgy tobacco outlet. SuperSam is next door tho so I suppose that might be why it has been vacant for ages ......

  7. EU blinked tonight and took their 'condition' off the table. However how has TM's deal changed from when it was last offered up for a vote? The Speaker is against offering up the same deal for another vote. The EU offering up a new carrot to vote for a deal does not change the deal on offer. I hope Bercow is consistent in his approach.

  8. We have the highest employment rates (no surprise as the population has increased) and the lowest unemployment rates for ages. So this knife situation is existing in a sub culture. Outside of the mainstream. We've had 3 years of 'navel gazing' over 'Brexit'. We should leave with 'No Deal'. Then get onto knife crime. Obviously we then have multiple years trying to do trade with the EU whilst trying to eliminate the Elephant in the Room. Which is the Immigration/Free Movement issue. Not to be confused with someone trying to have a two week holiday outside their own Country. Or even a 4 day break. I've just been bought return flights to the EU for April. So I have to watch all this stuff!

  9. The lottery winner seems to have opened a Twitter account in March 2019. Maybe even today or yesterday. Purporting to be offering 10 x £1M prizes via Twitter, on a random basis, for following/retweeting his prize offer. He has attracted 7605 followers ~ 15 of which I know. The account is unverified by Twitter. I don't know if the account is genuine.

With all the news at the moment highlighting knife crime and shootings how does it come to this?

My theory is that organised high level crime is where it starts well before it gets to the kids on the street. I believe it is linked to illegal immigration.

Imagine you want to get into the UK - unless you are a good swimmer or forger of documents you will be tempted to use a trafficking group who for thousands of pounds will get you across the channel. Arriving and secreted somewhere in the UK your traffickers know your illegal and say to you that in order to earn money to survive and pay them back for their services you carry drugs for them. Seems a good idea until you stray into someone else's patch. The health and safety advice is you need to protect yourself and the recommended form of defence is a knife.

You are now have an established source of income and you like to spread the message so everyone can be enticed into have a piece of the cake. By getting children on board and setting up the county lines of distribution is when trouble at the local end begins. Kids involved talking to their friends on how easy it is to get a nice handout for introducing substances to the playground result in arguments and jealously. Jimmy Smith appears to be doing very well at the tuck shop and using a brand new smart phone in the playground. Soon our illegal immigrant is a human resources manager creating his own little empire.

Arguments years ago at school revolved around bullying with name calling and the rare fisty cuffs when the gathered spectators would call out "fight fight", until a teacher appeared to bring the situation under control and the offenders marched off to the head teacher for a good flogging. Nowadays matters are sorted out after school hours on the street corner or in the local park with devastating consequences. No policemen to investigate who is involved, no community policemen looking after their patch, no Neighbourhood Watch operating - you are better off asking the local postman what is going on. Everyone is now on their own including the general public.

All this can be reduced with proper border controls and we don't want the military helping out or it is going to be machine guns all round. The real problem is we have no idea who is actually here in the UK.

Your topic title is what it is. Then you mention very little about knives! There is a Policy/guidance decision, on sentencing, to be made about anyone caught in possession of a knife in criminal circumstances. A 'deterrent' sentence is required. Any current guidance is obviously not a sufficient deterrent. As people caught with knives (in garden variety circumstances) are not being locked up in a routine manner.

  11. She made the Daily Mail for 5 minutes. Her quotes seemed to reflect stuff from her distant memory. She can be voted out next time she is up for Election. I did look up how long she has been in post. Since 1996 was the answer I found.

  12. Retail is struggling. A restaurant in a unit is better than no occupation. By the way  .... I needed an item today ..... To replace something that failed to work anymore. I just went to Amazon and ordered a replacement with one click. No trudging around town searching for anything. It will arrive as if by magic!
