The Formula One World Champion had been honoured with a knighthood and many awards have gone to people who have been recognised for their part in helping the nation cope with the coronavirus crisis this year.   5. Crews from Hereford Fire Station attended a car fire on Westfaling Street, Hereford during the early hours.
  6. Government confirms plans for the return of primary and secondary schools and colleges in January 2021 Today’s announcement by the Secretary of State for Education, Rt Hon Gavin Williamson CBE MP, has confirmed that Herefordshire’s primary schools and special schools will return from week commencing 4 January 2021. Secondary schools will be open from 4 January for vulnerable children and for the children of key workers. From week commencing 11 January, secondary schools will open for years 11 and 13 (exam year pupils). The remaining secondary pupils and college students will work from home initially and then return to face-to-face education from Monday 18 January. Individual schools and colleges will be making their own arrangements to contact parents, carers and students to confirm the return date. Parents, carers and students are advised to check their school or college website and normal channels of communication for the latest updates. School transport provision will continue to run as normal from week commencing 4 January 2021.
  7. Tier 3 for Herefordshire from midnight. Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced the changes to MPs in the house of Commons this afternoon. Full details and a breakdown of what Tier 3 means can be found here
  8. For safety reasons, the A49 Victoria Street underpass in #Hereford remains closed to pedestrians due to flooding. Highways England have put up additional signs pointing the way towards the nearest crossing point. For updates follow the @HighwaysWMIDS Twitter feed or call them on 0300 123 5000.

  10. The MHRA, the UK drug regulator, has given approval to the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine to be used for immunization on British soil. The formula is the second one given the green light in the country. The first doses due to be given out to people from Monday 4th January 2021 amid rising coronavirus cases. The UK has ordered 100 million doses - enough to vaccinate 50 million people.
  11. Campaign: Yet another RTC on the A49 near Moreton on Lugg today. This is the third accident in less than a week! This follows another RTC on the A49 near Leominster on Boxing Day after a collision between car and fuel tanker. A man was taken to hospital only last Tuesday (22nd) following another RTC. There was also an accident on the 14th of December north bound at Dinmore and and accident where a vehicle ended upside down in a ditch at the end of November. There have been many more accidents over the years in the accident hotspot. Hereford Voice is calling for changes to be made on this notorious section of the A49 to improve safety for motorists.   17. A motorist has crashed their car through a wall and into the cider press on Whitecross Road this morning. The are no reports of any injuries.
  18. Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service water rescues teams from across the two counties have rescued 44 people from their vehicles, caught out by the rising floodwaters, further crews have assisted homeowners with serious flooding effecting electrics and giving advice. Please adhere to any 'road closure' signage.

  20. A West Mercia Police Specials Officer came across an RTC last night outside Leominster, minutes after it happened. The driver lost control going too fast through the flood water. It is important to slow down and be extremely cautious in this weather!
  21. A busy night for Hereford Police with 3 x arrests for drink drive and 2 x arrests for drink and drug drive. West Mercia Police supporting the NPCC drink/drug drive campaign.

  23. VETERAN fundraiser Alan Blake has been given some civic support in his marathon project to raise £100,000 for local charities. Alan, who is 89, is aiming to complete a 15-mile challenge to raise funds for the parish church of Burghill, Rotary and Parkinson’s – but all without leaving his garden. He will navigate a circular walk around his steep garden steps 458 times, which will be the equivalent of walking from Hereford to Lyde then Moreton on Lugg, Burghill, Tillington, Stretton Sugwas and back to his family home in Hampton Park. Alan began his challenge on October 1 and, on Saturday, he gained the backing of Hereford’s first citizen when the Mayor, Cllr Kath Hey along with Junior Mayor, Theo Ashton joined him on a circuit. Mayor Kath Hey commented that in representing Hereford City Council She expressed how delighted both she and the Junior Mayor were to accompany Alan on one of his garden circuit walks in support of his fundraising endeavours and that Alan’s determination and efforts were truly impressive and inspirational.
