Im really sorry - but treating these two junctions as roundabouts at night does not need any new road layout.

I would perhaps make it a little later in the evening - maybe from 10pm - but really its common sense.

No lights needed there - I too have been in Asdas late at night and sat at the red light for ages for NOT ONE CAR to go past.

Changing road layouts would make no difference at all.

There are a few different issues here :

The supermarket get customers that dont know about the tickets needed to "prove" you shop there - actually - when you think about it - the way Morrisons do it is a good system.

You buy your ticket - then get it refunded when you shop in their store.

( I personally dont like it at all - it pi$$ me right off - but I understand it )

If they didnt - due to the lack of parking spaces in the town centre im sure they would have office workers just park in their car park all day taking up spaces for shoppers.

The car parks that use the companies to send out speculative invoices - I see as a way to control it - although the word is getting out there loud and proud that you dont need to pay these tickets.

The drive way example is a little off - but just trying to explain that I do own my driveway - its mine. I work bloody hard to pay my mortgage each month for MY house and driveway. If people want to just come and use MY land - I would be pretty pi$$ed off about it and do everything I could to stop that from happening again.

One poster said about about car parks making money Monday - Friday with office workers - yes true - but its still my bit of land from 6pm to 7am 7 days a week.

A barrier/gate probably wouldnt work as people who do have a permit for the car park would probably get fed up with that - and there isnt enough money in it to have a person on guard 24/7 - so another poster mentioned above a reduced "token" £1 charge for the evenings.

I think you are probably right  - thats probably the best way for these land owners to operate and get something from their investment.

Not in agreement at all actually - definitely not on the "speculative invoices" - but I do understand that its a way to stop people parking on "my" land.

When I say "my" - I wish I had the money to own a bit of land in the centre of Hereford, but how else would we advise land owners to stop people parking on their land.

If it were me - and I had worked hard, saved, invested in a bit of land and had people parking on it - I would put signs up and put wheel clamps on them. My personal view - "how dare people" park on my land.

If someone actually parked in my driveway - I think I may do something even better.

If you are not allowed to put wheel clamps on peoples cars - I would block them in with another vehicle - perhaps an old banger.

Can I ask you a question.

If you owned a bit of land, lets say a small bit of land in town - in fact - lets take the black lion example.

The car park is for patrons only.

You have parked there to pick up your indian ( lovely food by the way at Spices and we have only tried it due to the advert on here ) and you get people who are not patrons of your pub, parking on your land to go shopping, or go to the left bank ( when it opens ) or visit friends who live down that road and your car park is either full because people who are not useing your pub are parking there, so your customers have no room to park or damaged from cars who are not paying into the pub as they are not patrons and as such there is not enough money in the pot to repair the bit of land that you have brought, or even some idiot has parked too close to your fire exit and is now making trading in your pub illegal as you now have a car parked in front of your fire exit and you cant find the owner of the car to move it...........................

How would you deal with these people that park on your land?

My point was that some smart lawyer created some "facts" about Kebabs reducing domestic violence - thats a load of rubbish - just a smart lawyer winning a case on the day with someone that doesnt know his backside from his funny bone.

My point is - the system in Hereford is currently working for the good of the town.

The point about the take outs spreading it out even more - well my thoughts are all over this thread as to why I think that would not work in the long run. I know my views are not agreed with, but thats where I am. 

In fact - I now regret posting the above post - I dont know enough about the issues here to pass comment with any real knowledge of these cases.

I take all your above points on board, but my limited understanding is the Council is trying to run "as a business" with business type philosophy.

The council is like an oil tanker and all that, it takes time for it to change direction as it is so big.

If you take a load of employees, who have worked in an public sector environment where people have not perhaps been challenged by senior team before, then those employees could take that challenge as bullying. 

I dont know all the facts of the case or cases in question - so perhaps im talking cr@p, but I am aware of issues in the private sector of challenging under performing staff, or poor performing staff which they may consider to be bullying when it actually is not. 

Either way - people within the council are having to work harder than before, show more commitment and probably longer hours whilst taking on more responsibilities with little if any thanks or recognition. That is not a good place to be for anyone. 

Ok - ill chime in. 

Im guessing that very few, if any on here actually run big business, or teams of people. 

The largest team I have ever run was for just over 100 staff. 

From that 100, I had under managers to assist me.

As in all groups/communities from that 100 odd staff, some were great, some were on the fiddle, some were lazy, some had issues, some had potential that was hard to tap, some needed to be moved on. 

Thats what happens in business, im pretty sure the council are the same.

However - when you work for the council, if you get put on a performance review, or put through a disciplinary procedure, its easy to say - "racism/sexism/bullying" - and you may get a pay out. Hey its worth a shot! 

Im not saying this council is great. Its not - far from it - however they do have some very difficult issues to deal with at the top, manly finance which then trickles all the way down the chain. 

Amazing what FACTS you can come up with if you have time on your hands.

Here are a couple of other "nuggets"

1) 6 late night eateries are open ( from the commercial down to shake and stir ) all employing people spreading out the customers

2) crime and disorder is considerably down in the night time economy

Where we are is not a bad place to be.

Guy Taylor may be shuffling more paper around for 7 minutes, but I am prepared to give him some time to understand what he is fighting for. Ignoring peoples' plight for one reason or another is one thing that I have realised over the years is the smug attitude of people who tell us that things are ok and the norm.

Last I heard that building was going to be part of the new University.

Makes a lot of sense too for the kids to walk to the college past it every day and aspire to go to the Uni at the bottom of the hill.

Will be interesting to see what happens.

But - it will be interesting as to what goes on around the outskirts of the Mannor.

Im sure there will be one or two meetings in "pubs" or private places where other countries all talk with each other face to face.

But - I will agree with you that Op Castlemain appears to be doing the trick - I personally have seen less street drinkers around during the day time in the town and that can only be a good thing! I hope they are getting the help they need.

What I find frustrating is that the government soon find a few million pound to send in aid to foreign lands and the click of the finger, lets start looking after our own country!!!

Paul - foreign aid is a difficult issue.

It's a lot more than sending aid by air to Africa!

It's normally to do with trade deals in that country that will help "us" in the long run.

Of course natural disasters should get help too - especially in poor countries where the people and the gvt can't do enough.

Interesting to note that Haiti is still a mess since the quake and aid there has stopped - and in some cases even money that was pledged to help by some countries never got there - but I guess Haiti doesn't have much - doesn't have anything to offer the rest of the world.

But - I agree with you - our foreign aid budget was the same as our police budget last year - and that doesn't feel right to me.

It was hardly used because it was always closed or people were confused over which couple of hours it was open and manned from my understanding. Personally I think the government have cut back on the policing budget too much, it is not too bad if you live in a city but I feel for the smaller rural communities. No easy answer.

I would suggest although I dont know - it was hardly used because people are not reporting lots of crime?

But I agree with you in not agreeing where all the cuts are taking place.

Children's care services -,disabled care services - schools transport - all of this is NEEDED by those who can't help themselves I n my opinion - that's not right to effect them - but the cynical part of me would say do these people vote?

But their families do!

That said - I do believe that some of the benefit cuts have been right.

I know a couple of people who couldn't get work, but once their benefits were cut or stopped they mysteriously found they could get a job. Strange that - so in some cases I think that's been a good thing!

But I understand that this country has been borrowing money from other countries for far too long so we can cut the grass, keep unused police station front desks open and maybe one or two other things that this country does.

So there is a choice

1) keep borrowing money from other countries for as long as we can and keep unused police station front desks open.

2) charge us all more in taxation in some form

3) oh here's an idea - we could make some cuts and balance the budget of UK plc for the future - which will cause some discomfort - like er,,,,,, longer grass but eventually we as a country only spend what we have

I watched an old clip of Robin Williams doing stand up from the 80's the other day. The skit was about the states being $1 trillion in debt - how can that happen. because the yanks didn't get their house in order they now owe $12 trillion - that's a lot of money to owe and I don't want UK plc to get ourselves into that level of debt so we can keep unused police front desks open!

You are right Colin - cost cutting is getting very deep now and I'm sure it will get worse next year.

sooooo - would you like to pay more into the big pot to keep underused counters open?

If you do - can you please convince one or two other people to be happy to do so as well.
