  1. I understand that, Colin, but my wife was on the road, behaving herself and was hit, then abused by a motorist. If she was on the pavement, it wouldn't have happened, that is part of the reason for it, so it is linked to the topic in hand whether people like it or not.

I understand what you are saying but on the flip side many people are hurt from cyclist riding on footpaths, and while I can sympathise, two wrongs do not make it right. The law is their for a reason.

  2. There has been a significant fire at Henffordd Gardens (retirement homes near Courtyard Theatre) just off Edgar Street this evening.

    Henffordd Gardens .JPG

Several fire appliances and ambulances are on site.

We have spoken with the son of one of the residents this evening who was comforting his mother and he informed us that the fire was caused unfortunately by one of the residents smoking in bed. Thankfully nobody was seriously hurt but a few residents were treated for smoke inhalation.

The flat at the source of the fire has extensive damage and there is additional smoke damage to neighbouring flats throughout the building however, most of the residents will be able to return to their homes this evening.

The Courtyard Theatre have been a huge support by taking in the residents and giving them shelter and hot drinks etc while the fire crews examine the rest of the building.

  3. Whilst I agree with the vast majority of the comments on this thread, I must add some balance from a cyclist viewpoint.

On Tuesday morning, my wife was cycling to work along Blackfriars Street towards Widemarsh Street.

A man in a BMW passed her so closely that his wing mirror hit her handlebar, he then proceeded to berate my wife for hitting his car...

I am in no way condoning bad behaviour by people on bicycles, but car drivers are not wholly innocent in the overall picture, if it was actually properly safe to cycle on the roads, I dare say there would be less bike use on pavements.

I do agree though that there should be more law enforcement.

We are all aware of the bad habits of some motorists, this tope is purely about cyclists riding on footpaths, that said I understand exactly what you are saying about feeling safe on footpaths but I have to agree with Steve's comments above...

While I understand concerns, it was never really an issue for us growing up, I can understand cyclists feeling safer riding on footpaths but try asking the same question to the pedestrians about cyclists on footpaths! It is against the law to ride cycle on many footpaths simple! I would feel a lot safer driving my car along the hard shoulder of the motorway rather than have to be in the same lane as a huge lorry or bus in my little car but I can't can I.
  4. Hi All,

Interested to read more on this topic and see the photos.

I wish I had been quicker with my phone today - Lovely chap cycled up to the Victoria Bridge and got off - started to push his bike over towards me when I heard " Look Out" from behind me - spun round and saw another dog walker scope her little dog up out of the way of a woman pedaling really really slowly. I stepped to the side and said " Its No Cycling on this bridge "  The other lady wasn't so polite. The cyclist was now going so slow around us all she was wobbling all over the place until she came along side the gentleman cyclist and literally ran out of speed and fell into him.

He was furious but she didn't say a word or look remotely embarrassed that she had effectively cut up 3 people and 2 dogs. She simply got back on her bike and peddled away and yes I saw what house she went into !!!!

Maybe I should pop a sign through the door when I am next passing but I really think that the signs are a good idea even if it raises awareness. I know the roads are dangerous but walkers should feel safe on the pavements surely?

Hi TaraLeigh and welcome to Hereford Voice.

Unfortunately this is becoming more frequent and more should be done by the police and councils to prevent this once and for all.

  5. At last!

It only took three and half years to have ATM's installed at the Old Market shopping centre.

The Old Market opened back in April 2014.

The lack of an ATM was discussed a year later in May 2014.

I am pleased to see that two have finally been installed and are live, not ready for use by the public just yet as there is no cash in them but I am sure by early next week they will be fully operational.

  6. I have submitted a note to this application as follows:

I have no real objection to the overall application for the apartments however, I do think that the retail units MUST be addressed before any planning is permitted for the upper floors.

In other words, I think a clause should be made to make good the retail units on the ground floor in the first instance, otherwise we will still have empty shops looking tatty with new builds above

  7. Yesterdays criminals...

This lad knocked into two elderly people just after we took this photo. The couple were pretty upset because the cyclists had caught the mans arm as he continued to ride past them on the narrow footpath, he didn't even stop to apologise.

  8. A planning application has now been submitted for a proposed conversion of retail units into 17 dwelling flats.

Former Chadds building Commercial Street Hereford.

The proposal seeks planning permission for the residential development of 17no. apartments, over 3 floors, with a new dedicated ground floor entrance, together with the rationalisation of the existing ground floor retail unit.

    The Proposal

Although not of high architectural significance the character of the existing buildings is extremely well suited to its location. Rather than demolish and replace the buildings therefore a strategy has been adopted to convert and refurbish the existing property to contribute to the long term desire to revitalise of the area.

The lack of retail or commercial interest in the building over a number of years confirms that it is no longer suitable for similar use on its existing scale. Realistically this is the case for much of Commercial Street. Failure to address this would see the building continue to be unoccupied for a prolonged period of time further negatively impacting on the character of the area.
To assist in the re-invigoration the proposals aim to provide 17 self-contained apartments within the upper 3 storeys of the building. In effect this will bring people to the heart of the area facilitating increased footfall to the benefit of local business and enterprises. Additionally it may allow the ground floor retail element of the existing property to potentially be offered as smaller scale units more suited the location making this far more attractive to potential retail tenants and business owners ultimately making it increasingly likely that this will help spur occupancy and therefore start to again create a vibrancy to the street.

The new proposals will include the provision of two new dedicated entrances off Union Street to serve the residential apartments. The most northerly existing ground floor entrance along Commercial Street will also be utilised likewise. These will provide direct access to stairs which lead to the upper floors of the building.
The Apartments will be distributed as follows:

    First Floor
    Second Floor
    Third Floor
    - 6no one bedroom apartments. - 2no two bedroom apartments - 4no one bedroom apartments. - 3no two bedroom apartments - 1no one bedroom apartments. - 1no two bedroom apartments
Each apartment will also contain a living dining kitchen together with a bathroom. All residencies will be of contemporary design and be of high quality standard and finish. New replacement windows will be provided to all existing openings to ensure they meet current regulation performance requirements. Two new window openings will be created for one apartment at second floor level but neither of these will be street facing. New Velux windows will also be provided to habitable rooms at third floor level. All dwellings are designed to comply with DCLG space standards.

The Ground Floor will be largely otherwise unaltered until such time an interested purchaser or tenant is attracted to develop the reduced size units. - Planning application P173885/F

  10. No Colin. I had it in mind when I referred to a pork product. My view was yours was nothing more than a silly comment and one which should not have attracted the attention of the local Constablary. Frankly, your visit and presumably words of advice were driven by an ever increasing ideology that wants to prohibit people from expressing anything that may offend anyone and the Police are the tool the State will use to stifle any expression of objection.

When you can't make the silly comment you made without the attention of the Police then it's a sad look out to anyone else who thinks that by mocking killers they'll be able to excercise their so called Freedom Of Speech. I wouldn't have made your comment but I and others should defend your right to say it because if we don't the State will pluck out a silly girl from Leominster, make an example of her and ruin her life as a warning to the rest of us that if you say anything, no matter it's level of so called intolerance, they'll get you and stop you ever saying anything ever again.

I totally agree Bob and it is very frustrating, especially when the people being targeted by the police about their comments or personal views appear to be dealt with a lot more severely by the courts than the regular thieves, burglars, druggies or motorist driving without insurance, clearly an agenda here...

I think ALL cyclists should have a test similar to that of motorcycles and give people some education.

The council offer free courses which Ubique posted above.

    Absolutely spot on Steve.

  12. Okay folks I have just had a discussion with Keith and we have agreed Sunday 19th November 0900-1400 for 'Phase 2'.

We obviously need as much help again and we will see if we can encourage the scout/cubs etc to keep us refreshed with beverages again. The plan of actions is to clear some of the outstanding dead branches and bushes and to paint the fence! We will also continue to try and break the back of the duckweed and also erect two additional signs. I have got the funding for some Hammerite and I will make sure that we have a dozen of so paint brushes to make light work of the 75 metre length.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!
