  1. Considering adopting a child? Get in touch with us this National Adoption Week

    pre_school_children_1.jpeg.5c7ea972e79822d009aa2b934a01b5a0.jpeg

Adoption Central England (ACE) is supporting National Adoption Week and the #YouCanAdopt campaign which sets out to debunk myths around adoption and urging people who are considering adoption to take the next step.

The national campaign runs from 12 - 18 October and reinforces that the key attribute for adopting a child is providing a loving, safe and stable home and that factors such as occupation, salary, the size of someone’s home, home ownership or age are not important.

Sarah*, a single adopter, talks about adopting Theo*, a dual heritage 8-year-old with autism. Theo had four ‘chaotic’ years with his birth family followed by four years in foster care before being adopted by Sarah. Sarah explains:

    Quote

“Theo lives in the moment and is a very glass half full person, despite his autism he grabs every opportunity and lives life to the full.

“In the early days we bonded over a mutual love of theatre, music and cinema and we had our first holiday. All in all a nice honeymoon period of about four months. Then he really let me know he felt.

“He ran away from me on many occasions, he would sit down in the street and refuse to move. He learnt a few choice swear words at school and used them to great effect.  All of these incidents ended with him sobbing in my arms.  One day when we were swimming, he came up to me in the pool and whispered very quietly in my ear, “mummy I don’t want to move house anymore, you won’t send me away will you?” He broke my heart, and I made a promise to him that I would never, ever send him away.

“And things slowly got better. He learnt to trust me, to believe that it wasn’t an empty promise. He settled in school, made friends, and we enjoyed celebrating his birthday and Christmas together. He learnt to swim and ride a bike. We found our new normal.

“We have also started therapeutic life story work. Over time the therapist gained Theo’s trust and we would carry on talking for hours after the therapist left.  He started the work as a little boy in pain and emerged showing me glimpses of the young man he will become.

“I’ve also found support in a community in fellow adopters. You can’t beat peer support and advice. We are great friends with other single adopter families and we regularly meet up. It’s great for the adults because we all understand the children's ‘quirks’ and they can be themselves without any judgement.

“Adoption is a hard road to walk. It will take everything you have to give. For me there are no regrets. I have an amazing son who inspires me every day.  I love him, he loves me – we are a family and that’s all that matters.”

Councillor Felicity Norman, Cabinet Member for Children and Families, added:

    Quote

“National Adoption Week is the perfect opportunity to encourage anyone thinking about adoption to take those next steps.

“Children from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities are over disproportionately represented in the care system and ACE are particularly interested in speaking to more BAME and mixed-race families interested in adoption who could provide a safe and loving home for children in our care.”

  2. £500 payment to self-isolate aims to help stop the transmission of Covid-19

The government has announced financial support for workers asked to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace.

    12473.thumb.jpg.9a0e9f8f916b57da7e8773b4b26e340d.jpg

A £500 payment may be paid if you test positive for Coronavirus and have to self-isolate, or if you have had close contact with someone who has tested positive and have been told to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace. You must be employed or self-employed, unable to work from home and you will lose your income.

You must also receive any of the following benefits:

    Universal Credit

    Working Tax Credit

    Income Based Employment Support Allowance

    Income Based Jobseekers Allowance

    Income Support

    Housing Benefit

    Pension Credit

These payments are designed to help ensure people who have tested positive for Covid-19 and their close contacts self-isolate for the required period to stop the onward spread of the virus. They are also designed to encourage people who are eligible for this payment to get tested if they have symptoms. This is important to help stop the transmission of Covid-19 and avoid further lockdowns.

The payment will be administered locally by Herefordshire Council. If you meet all the criteria, are on a low income and will face financial hardship as a result of not being able to work due to requiring to self-isolate but you are not in receipt of a qualifying benefit, then you may be eligible for a discretionary payment.

Apply for the £500 Test and Trace support payment online at www.herefordshire.gov.uk/isolationpayment

  3. A Historic pub in Herefordshire opened its doors again this week for the first time in five years and in spite of the current pandemic. The New Inn at St Owen's Cross, a sixteenth-century coaching inn,  has been a labour of love for three local businessmen, investor Mark Green and family, developer Mark Freeman and chef Michael Fowler. The team is delighted to be opening the doors this week creating new jobs, supporting local producers and offering a stand-out community-hub for those living locally.

Set to be another exciting destination pub in the Herefordshire food scene. The New Inn under the direction of Michael Fowler will be offering a British-modern menu centring on local and seasonal produce. And for those that want to make the most of their stay, there are also three sympathetically renovated rooms to enjoy all the luxuries of a night away on your doorstep.

    Mark Green says

    Quote

"I am passionate about keeping our pubs open, they are the heart of our local communities and giving The New Inn a new lease of life is more important now than ever. We hope people will enjoy a fantastic Herefordshire welcome when visiting, we have focused on sourcing local, using local services and of course, our menu will be locally focused too."

The pub will, of course, be serving Mark's well-known Two Farmers crisps at the bar as well as for the first-time a Two Farmers draught cider, alongside a daily changing lunch and dinner menu focused on locally sourced produce. Currently open Wed-Sunday

  6. On 18 September 2020 at Hereford Magistrates Court, Mrs Pearl Smith (51) of Oak Crescent, Clehonger pleaded guilty of failing to transfer her waste to an authorised person and secure the transfer with a written description of the waste.

In the case taken by Herefordshire Council’s Community Protection Team, Mrs Smith received a fine of £320, victim surcharge of £32 and a contribution towards costs of £150.

In this case, six household bags full of waste and a shopping trolley were found dumped in Newton brook which runs along Waterfield Road in Hereford in March 2019.

    Flytip2.jpg.9692f2455e7f7e77f297889b84f64f21.jpg

Evidence found in the bags led officers to Ms Smith who failed to co-operate with the investigation and provide an account of how her waste became fly tipped. At the hearing, Smith accepted that she had failed to transfer the waste to an authorised person and had therefore failed in her Duty of Care.David Hough, Herefordshire Council’s Trading Standards Service Manager, said:

    Quote

“Everyone has a legal duty of care to make sure their waste is disposed of correctly. This case shows you can be prosecuted even if your waste is fly tipped by someone else on your behalf. We would advise residents to always use a registered waste carrier and to never use the services of cold callers and social media tip run adverts which offer to remove waste for cash.

“The Community Protection Team will investigate fly tipping and anyone seeing a fly tip should report it via the council website or by phoning 01432 261761.”

  7. Businesses across the Marches are being invited to have their say on how the region should plan its economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic at a major virtual summit later this month.

The Marches Economic Recovery Summit – being staged by the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership – will bring together key local and regional partners to discuss the priorities for the region’s economy in the wake of the virus.

And the business community is also being urged to have its say by signing up for the October 15 event.

The summit – from 2.00pm to 3.30pm – is being held during the LEP-led Marches Business Recovery Week which aims to shape an agenda for the region’s future.

Marches LEP chair Mandy Thorn said guests would include representatives from the region’s three local authorities, business support organisations such as the British Business Bank, chambers of commerce, business boards and business and farming organisations.

    Quote

“This summit is very much about bringing organisations and sectors together to discuss how best the region can move towards recovery. I will be sharing the recovery priorities identified to date and asking some of those attending to give their views on these and put forward their priorities for recovery.

“We will also be carrying out polls during the discussions and sharing the results. Members of the public will be able to register to attend and all will be able to submit views via the chat function as well as taking part in the polls.

“We want to gather as wide a range of opinions as possible so that we can be confident the priorities we identify are those of the business community as a whole and not just a small section of it.”

For more information and to register to attend the event – which will be held on the Zoom platform – visit HERE

The Marches LEP is the business-led body tasked by the Government with driving economic growth across Herefordshire, Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.

  9. Mars is closer to Earth in October than it will be for another 15 years: How to see red planet.

If you spied a fiery red star close to the full moon over the weekend, it was actually Mars shining its bright red light in the night sky.

The planet will be visible at night throughout October, rising the highest in the sky around midnight each evening. It will shine in the east each evening and in the west before dawn.

But Mars doesn't always make an appearance like this. So, why is Mars shining so brightly?

The red planet makes its closest approach to Earth at 10:18 am ET on October 6. Mars will be 38,586,816 miles away from Earth --- yes, that's close for Mars -- and it won't be this close again until 2035. Mars in 2003 made its closest approach to Earth in 60,000 years, coming within a distance of 34.65 million miles.

Feel free to share your photographs of the planet Mars which is pretty dominant in the sky tonight.

    A statement said:👇

    Quote

“It is with great sadness that we can confirm we have had a child in our setting test positive for Covid-19.

We would like to express that we have worked very hard to put stringent procedures in place regarding Covid-19 to keep all of our children, parents and staff safe.

But unfortunately today a child has been dropped off for their normal session at nursery (having had a covid test on Saturday) the parents have sadly not shared this information with us until they rang mid morning to confirm the child had had a test and it had come back positive.

The implications of this are huge.

We now have a high number of children and staff having to self isolate for 14 days, this has now forced us as a setting to close.

We would like to ensure parents that we have been working with Public Health England today and they were very pleased with our Covid-19 Risk Assessment and our policies and procedures we have in place.

As I am sure we are sharing the same frustrations this situation has put us all in, and we can only thank our parents for their understanding at this terrible time.

Public Health England have confirmed we are able to re-open on Tuesday 20th October

    Thankyou ...the Lollipops Team.”

You will find the wonderful Peter Cooks Bread in various shops across Herefordshire including Fodder in Church St Hereford.

It was chosen as the standout winner from the competition’s six categories: Gluten Free, Innovation, Plain Sourdough, Sourdough with Other Ingredients, White and Wholegrain (see full list of the winners and highly commended loaves below).

The winning loaf stood out to the judges thanks to its innovative use of ingredients. The process is kicked off by creating a tea from hops which is used to make a sourdough starter. Once it’s had a week to mature, the starter is mixed with strong white flour and water before toasted spent beer grains, which have been soaked in ale overnight, are added from the Hop Shed Brewery. The loaf is bulk fermented for four hours then shaped and retarded overnight before baking the next day.

“The Wild Hops & Barley Loaf from Peter Cooks Bread is a deserving winner of Britain’s Best Loaf. It is a beautiful, and tasty, loaf with a great story behind it,” said Amy North, editor, British Baker.

“It faced stiff competition – the judges were very impressed with the overall quality of entries this year, particularly in the innovation category where we were delighted with botanical loaves, cheesy concoctions and some truly outstanding bread.”

The event was sponsored by ADM, American Pan UK and Scobie McIntosh/Revent, and took place at Meridian Hall in East Grinstead on 23 September 2020.

  19. Polish pharmaceutical company Biomed Lublin claims to have successfully completed the production of a drug for Covid-19.

    bigstock-348302944-990x556.thumb.jpg.b9a7e4ec3787a8e0e6b685d93e49fbfa.jpg

With the firm saying on September 23 that its initial research “has confirmed its efficacy”, it now plans to begin non-commercial clinical trials, and – if all goes well – Poland could be the first country in the world to have an effective drug capable of neutralising the SARS-CoV-2 virus at some stage over the next few months.

Biomed Lublin says that the drug is made by fractionating the plasma of healthy people – convalescents or those who had Covid-19 asymptomatically – and contains anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulins.

    Quote

“We have unequivocally proven that it is possible to produce a drug containing a concentrated dose of such antibodies and it can effectively use human plasma, which, after the fractionation process, can be converted into a drug with a treatment efficiency greater than plasma alone,” said Marcin Piróg, CEO of Biomed Lublin. “This is of great importance, especially taking into account the number of Covid-19 patients and how valuable and rare the raw material is given the current situation.”

“More than 3,000 ampoules of anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin have been produced, which after the completion of the required quality tests, including product stability tests, will be submitted to clinical trials in four centres: in Lublin, Bytom, Białystok and Warsaw. The release of the drug for non-commercial clinical trials is planned in the fourth quarter of 2020,” added Mr Piróg.

Biomed Lublin already manufactures other recognised human plasma drugs, such as Gamma anti-D and Gamma anti-HBs. The same technology was used by the company to produce anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin.

The project to come up with a Polish Covid-19 drug was initiated in March by Grzegorz Czelej a Polish doctor and senator, and Waldemar Sierocki, a member of Biomed Lublin’s supervisory board.

“We have a drug, a Polish drug for Covid-19, that works,” said Mr Czelej. “Since the drug was created thanks to the generosity of Polish convalescents, Poles will be the first to receive it. Also, Poles should come up with a name for it. We are waiting for suggestions.”

Mr Czelej also called on the country’s authorities to make the process of approving the drug as quickly as possible.

    Quote

“The treatment of Covid-19 with plasma from convalescents has already been approved by the World Health Organisation, the US Food and Drug Administration and the Polish Ministry of Health. Scientists from around the world report on the effectiveness of plasma therapy in the treatment of Covid-19. The safety of plasma drugs has been proven by several decades of practice, which is confirmed by experts. So, I appeal to the relevant authorities to issue a decision on the approval of this drug for coronavirus in ‘epidemic mode. Similar practices have already taken place in the case of other drugs conditionally approved for the treatment of Covid-19 in order to save the health and life of patients,” he said.

Mr Piróg meanwhile said that if Biomed Lublin were to receive more batches of plasma from convalescents from Polish regional blood donation and treatment centres, it will be able to plan the production of new batches of the drug that can be used to treat patients with Covid-19 before the completion of approval procedures. He also confirmed that the company was looking to purchase plasma from abroad.

“It is important if and when we receive confirmation of the possible availability of further plasma donations from convalescents. We must also take care to ensure the availability of other health and life-saving plasma-derived drugs, for the production of which we use the same production infrastructure,” he said.

“We produce our medicine from plasma obtained from donors in Poland and we are currently focusing on local needs. Nevertheless, we have already taken steps to check the possibility of purchasing plasma from convalescents from other countries, including the US, from where we are already buying plasma for the production of our other plasma-derived drugs. In addition, depending on the production capacity, we are able to consider the production of entrusted plasma for the needs of countries that would like to use Biomed Lublin and its technology to receive anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulins for the treatment of patients in their countries. Nevertheless, I emphasise that Poland is a priority now. We count on the support of the National Blood Centre and the Ministry of Health in accessing Polish plasma,” added Mr Piróg.

  20. The Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressing MPs and the whole nation on further coronavirus restrictions for England has announced a 10pm curfew in England for all pubs, bars and restaurants from Thursday.

As a result, 24 students have been told to self-isolate for 14days.

Karen Wright, director of public health for Herefordshire, said: “I can confirm that a Year 7 pupil at Whitecross High School, Hereford has tested positive for Covid-19.

"We would like to reassure parents and carers that we are working closely with the school and swift action has been taken to identify close contacts.

“There are 24 pupils identified as close contacts and they have been sent home to self-isolate for 14 days.

"All other pupils should continue to attend school as planned.

“We have worked with all our schools who have put robust measures in place to minimise the risk of coronavirus spreading.

"We understand parents will be concerned but we can expect to see more cases in schools and the process of testing and contact tracing is part of the ‘new normal’.
