  1. It wouldn't even need to be a full on tram system (with tracks etc) what about some compact electric buses? Inductive charging at each stop, simple one at a time system on the Hunderton bridge, and a turning point at each end. As long as the driver is competent, and watches carefully, then mingling with pedestrians should be no issues at all - they do wander around town with big industrial vacuum cleaners (pedestrian controlled ones) and never seem to manage to damage any pedestrians.

I am thinking along the lines of the little electric trains that you see at the seaside - slightly bigger with enclosed carriages, have solar panels on the roof to aid charging, regenerative braking etc - they would be sustainable, require little or no changes to infrastructure and could be paid for with an oyster card type system.

  2. Don't know if anyone else has spotted it, but the planning has been granted for 300 houses to the North of Roman Road - more traffic on already clogged roads when they are finished. I can see that we desperately need more housing, but the infrastructure cannot cope now.

    (hopefully the link will work)

  3. Looking at the size of land Skylon Park is on,how on earth would you have 6,000 people working there.

I struggle to see how 1,000 jobs could be made here.

Probably 6000 shift workers - 6 factories employing 1000 each, all on split shifts at 500 per shift (still a lot, but then break that down into smaller units and it soon adds up) - although, yes, still quite fanciful - I doubt there is close to that number currently working in Rotherwas as a whole

  4. I understood that Hereford is not getting a "bypass" at all. The new road around Hereford to the West is apparently planned to go through the middle of some very large housing estates, particularly the big development at Three Elms where over 1,500 new houses are going to be built. If this "bypass" goes through new large housing estates similar to the developments at Belmont then all the roads into Hereford will just get even more congested. The "bypass" will not make any difference to all the local residents getting in and out of Hereford for shopping/health services/schools and colleges.

Instead of waiting for Herefordshire Council to solve the problem (as you say they havent done this for 40 years)  I am dusting down my old bike and asking my ward councillor to try and get the Council to improve bus services and safe walking and cycling routes. That way I can avoid some of the traffic lights (there arent any on the Great Western Way) and get around Hereford more quickly. Hoping to even lose weight in the process and feel less hot under the collar about sitting in traffic jams when I pop into town. I must admit this week I have enjoyed some very nice sunny days and heard lots of birds singing and it has made me feel alot happier than driving my car and sitting in traffic. Also it hasnt cost me a penny in car parking charges and no worries about a parking fine if I meet a friend for a coffee.

Which is similar to what I do during the warmer months between March and September/October - I use my bike. In fact it takes the same amount of time to do the 8 miles to work on my bike, as it does in the car!

The reasoning (in my opinion) behind the Western "relief" road, is simple - it opens up huge tracts of land (a lot of which is on the council owned farm land - and land owned by councillors, strange that) for housing development. Grafton, Stretton Sugwas, Holmer etc - all of which attract a kick back to the council per house built of a few thousand £££.

They know what they are doing at the council, even if some of it is slightly dubious.........

  5. My friend reckons that the lights will be deliberately phased across Hereford to cause delays and gridlock in the run up to the planning application for the Southern Link Road. The Council have been unsettled as they thought they would have planning permission over a year ago but have loads more objections than they ever expected. The Council will actually try and make congestion worse so that locals will be begging for a bypass - which isnt what they are ever going to get. Why else would they be building a new road junction on Edgar St with yet another set of traffic lights on the A49?

They don't need to re phase the lights to get people to shout about a bypass - we have been shouting for 40 years

  6. Worthwhile then if several of you are coming into town for work and need to park all day to get a taxi together.  Providing of course you live close to each other.

Good idea - car sharing - something that should have been promoted more I think. If there are 5 of you then it's £1 each per day to park, take it in turns each week on a rota and the savings add up, as each only uses their car for one week in five, saving fuel and parking charges.

And before anyone raises the issue of insurance being invalidated, as long as you do not profit from the usage, then it is all perfectly legal. So that's £5 per person per week to park, plus a small contribution of say £5 each per week towards fuel, and in a modern car, the benefits add up quickly for all.

  7. You have highlighted why I have both front and rear facing cameras in my car. As basic car cameras can now be bought for less than £10, there is no excuse. OK, so at that price they don't have GPS and all the bells and whistles, but even cameras with all the features are available for less than £100.

Car cameras are an investment which will pay their own way, as soon as one finds oneself in the position described above. Insurances companies will tend to prefer a "knock for knock" arrangement and will increase your premium.

Incidentally, as a bonus I have some wonderful footage of a stag trotting along the road in front of me, not far from the village of Blakemere and of a top hatted man playing and driving a motorised piano (yes, really) in Pembridge, among other niceties.

We have had similar along the Bridge Sollars road before now, a pair of dear wandering around.

As has been said, refer everything to your insurance company - safer that way

  8. I agree with Paul in that it's a little late now.

I have not seen the plans or followed this thread in detail ...would this mean the loss of the allotments?

Asda are renowned for providing cheap fuel it's just a bloody shame that it will pitch up against the one local provider (harvest) that has always tried to deliver a good deal and not just when the supermarkets are having a pop at each other!

We are ripped off in this county in so many ways!

The PFS will be going on the grass between the A49 and the allotments, pretty much where the old station and Greyhound Dog used to be years ago. I was told ages ago (can't verify accuracy) that the tanks are already in place, and that is also why there is an extra exit leading towards the bridge from the little Asda painted on roundabout

  9. I read today somewhere that you would need need to smoke 320 joints (presumably in a day) to obtain a death certificate! However if you were still able to read said death certificate, cause of death would read "Carbon Monoxide Poisoning" not cannabis overindulgence! Who'd of thunk it!!

more like if you could be a) bothered to read said certificate and b) if you hadn't used the certificate to skin up with :D

  10. It is interesting to note that FC have selected there new pastors for the new church they are setting up in the Nederlands

    attachicon.gifimage.jpg

But while they are busy setting up new churches all around the world building up the FC empire!!…a question I'd ask is what are FC doing to help those Christians who are being persecuted through out the Middle East by Islamist groups particular Isis who in Iraq/Syria are murdering, enslaving robbing etc just because they are Christians…but it would seem FC couldn't careless about there plight?…in fact it's not just FC but other Christian organisations who seem to be doing very little if anything at all to help there brethren who are being persecuted in those war torn regions as it is far more important to them to continue to build their churches than to stretch out a helping hand to these fellow Christians many of whom are children that have become orphaned due to this unholy conflict!!!

Maybe it's because those poor souls haven't got any money for the thrift???

  11.

I've just read about a new report about too many traffic lights from the Institute for Economic Affairs

"a two-minute delay to every car journey made in a year equates to an astonishing loss to the economy of around £16 billion."

And turning off traffic lights is such an easy thing to at least try!

...and most of that in Hereford, where I am sure the council have a special deal to get traffic lights at cost price :)

Seriously though, count the number of lights (including pedestrian crossings) between Belmont Tesco and leaving town towards Worcester.....I think it's about 16 sets (going via Commercial Road

  12. Portugal (I think) took the step of de criminalizing all "hard" drugs a few years ago. Rather than making it a custodial punishment ie prison, they offered rehab and help to addicts to get off whatever they were using. Maybe worth our government looking at this option instead.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/portugal-decriminalised-drugs-14-years-ago-and-now-hardly-anyone-dies-from-overdosing-10301780.html

Decriminalize it, regulate the supply and make some revenue from the sales. If it's grown and distributed properly, then the criminal supply will eventually fall off, as it becomes non profitable. There are (effectively) co-ops in operation around the country, groups of tokers who grow and distribute between themselves, thus keeping the quality the same, and avoiding the criminal funding element by re investing the money into supplies.

Personally, as long as you are over the age of 21, then I see no problem. The biggest issue is where teenagers use it while they still have "squishy" minds that are developing, then it can cause longer term effects. I know a few people who use it regularly and have no issues with it, mental or otherwise, and they all hold down full time jobs - obviously they do not have any while working, only during their own out of hours time.

  13. That happened to me once in a diesel car! My boss at the time insisted that I could drive through the water under the bridge at Rotherwas, clearly that was a mistake because water got into the air intact and because it was a diesel it knackered the engine.

It's happened to a lot of people - modern cars have the air intake quite low down due to packaging constraints within the engine bay, leading to a large number of water damaged blocks

  14. The power of nature really is amazing! Think of the amount of water flowing through there per second, and the mind boggles (I did A level geography, and we had to work out the flow rates for river cross sections, and even with a small river the numbers are staggering)

Could potentially get worse yet, as we are forecast for heavy rain in the welsh mountains today (Wednesday) and more Thurs/Friday, plus over the weekend - be prepared everyone and stay safe.

Also, if you have to drive through flood water, keep the speed low - 2nd gear with higher than normal revs is sufficient, max of probably 10 mph. You don't want a big big bow wave to swamp your air intake - or indeed smaller vehicles coming the other way.

If you are unsure, find another route.

  15. Haven't they been in place for a few years now? Very prominent at the end of East St/Broad St junction, so not easy to miss. Something in my mind is telling me that when they were put up, that they would be monitored via cctv/police/traffic wardens etc and people would be fined?

  16. So, apart from some new looking benches, and repaving the entire area again, what exactly is new in that proposed image? I am assuming that the "ghosts" in the image are there to represent the people that are stuck in the traffic chaos at Asda roundabout trying to get into town? :)
