  1. While there are people who can cycle, there are many who have to rely on public transport.

     

    I do have a bike, I have not used it since before I was ill, I am going to get it back on the road for the summer, but to be honest with some of the idiots on the road I am not sure if I want, people who do not indicate, park where they want to, get too close to cyclists.

     

    Saying that I see many cyclists who are no better, going down one way streets the wrong way, riding on pavements, going through red lights, and also thinking that stopping at a zebra crossing when people going across do not apply to them,

     

    We need a reliable and cheap public transport system and not the stupid tram idea that some people are looking at

     

    Cant believe your moaning over 20p! Do you expect them to keep the prices the same all the time?

     

    The tram idea is probably one of the most sensible ideas I have read about in years, there are just 2 roads into the city centre from the south, massive bottle neck everyday, too many traffic lights and no bypass or additional river crossing expected anytime soon, so the train idea gives another alternative without interfering with pedestrians or cyclists in my opinion its a win win. 

  2. The nearest pub is around two miles walk / drive its called The Vaga, in Vaga Street in Hunderton.... if driving come onto Belmont Road, drive until you get to McDonalds take the first left afterwards and follow the road around.

     2 miles walk from Northolme? It is more like 3/4 of a mile at most just off the Belmont Road. It is only 2 miles from Tesco to the leisure centre. Vaga is a good pub though, good atmosphere.

    How councils and other authorities issue fixed penalty notices (FPNs) for environmental offences, fine limits and how money can be spent.

     

    Fixed penalty notices (FPNs) can be issued to deal with environmental offences like:

     

       * littering

       * fly-tipping

       * dog control offences

       * graffiti

       * fly-posting

       * nuisance parking (people selling or repairing cars on the road)

       * abandoned vehicles

       * leafleting without permission on land where leafleting is restricted (‘designated land’)

       * failing to nominate a key holder or give the council key holder details in an alarm notification area

       * failing to provide a waste carrier licence (for businesses transporting their own waste)

       * failing to provide a waste transfer note when moving non-hazardous waste

     

     

    I only wish they would issue more of these particularly for littering and nuisance parking (on pavements)

  4. correction! the Oval development is now in its sixth year not one, they are behind because the builders did not pay the workers for 3 months earlier this year and the workforce walked off site that said the subject of this posting was the traffic going down Woodward Ave when it is soley  a residential street not a carriageway for all traffic. I supported the turn off of the asda lights but it has not change, and what has that got to do with the Oval? you are doing exactly what the councillor has done blame the roadworks on Belmont road, by blaming the lights at Asda!

     

    Regardless of whether this an A or B road or residential area, I have paid my road tax which entitles me to drive along these streets. I never mentioned any road works? What I did say was that THESE houses were not there a year ago. And, "if they put roundabouts back and reduced the amount of traffic lights things would run a lot smoother, this is evident when the traffic lights at Asda breakdown" and I stand by this statement.

  5. Mick I have no intention or desire to get into a argument with you, it is apparent from your replies at the beginning of this post when answering Diligaf that you think it is alright to make Newton Farm into a rat run!!!

     

    You are now to to defuse our conversation..Yes I do think it is okay to use these roads, I pay my car tax so I am entitled to drive where I choose, that is the first thing, secondly I have used this run for years, these houses were not there a year ago and already I see complaints, when really the complaints should be aimed at the highways agency, if they put roundabouts back and reduced the amount of traffic lights things would run a lot smoother, this is evident when the traffic lights at Asda breakdown, so I support Colin and HV with their lights out campaign. It would also help if they staggered school times.

Mick, it is you that is wrong! it isn't all local people trying to get out of the Oval otherwise we have no problem, lorries frequently come off Belmont roundabout to get out of the line of traffic I have seen them myself, and I have myself been sat on a bus in traffic for up to an hour when coming out of Tesco and going into town.

     

    Ragwert, in the 14 years you haven't lived in Newton Farm things have got considerably worse, I have live in Charlton Ave for 42 years we never had this problem up to 5 years ago, and the development traffic around the Oval definitely hasn't helped the shopkeepers are moaning on a daily basis ( it may have changed in the last 3 months while in hospital for major heart surgery) but in the past 3 weeks Ive been home the traffic is at a  standstill again early in the morning outside my home.

     And before someone tries to correct me again, they have decided not to dig the road up outside my home for some reason they erected the railings yesterday and pulled them down this morning leaving them lying on the grass.

     

    Glenda, I am not going to get into an argument with you but what I will tell you is that I use the route everyday and everyday I have absolutely no problem getting out onto the Belmont Road. I understand what you are saying is that the cars do back up into Charlton Ave but that is down to just numbers and all the building work that is going on around you, if they were not being let out onto the main road the queues would be up around Brampton Road. 

  7.  This problem started because people in their wisdom or so they thought saw the traffic at the Belmont roundabout and made a detour down Southolme Rd into Waterfield rd thinking they would get out onto Belmont Rd again via the Oval and they are wrong. People already in the line of traffic on Belmont Rd won't let them exit the Oval (and who can blame them) after standing in traffic for anything up to a hour, the people standing to exit the Oval think they will  be willing to let a stream of traffic out in front of them. I see the build-up of traffic every morning outside my home in Charlton Ave at a standstill for anything up to 30 minutes including buses, the fumes from the running engines is not pleasant but that is the official  carriage way we are not allowed to moan. The vehicles from the building site at the Oval doesn't help, now today they have dug up the road in Charlton Ave,  I don't know why or any reason to do so.

     

    You are wrong Glenda, they let me out at the Oval with very little effort and this is why local people use this rat run,it saves quite a lot of time, think about it, if it wasn't effective no-one would use it.

  8. Understandably yes. Speeding no. Blocking my drive no. Courtesy yes. If you do use it please don’t block my drive. There are plenty of gaps in between drives to wait patiently. You wouldn’t block a junction, so why block my driveway?

    I hear that cooking oil on the windshield is not easy to remove - prolonging your journey!

    Take this as you will.

     

    I agree with no speeding but what difference is not blocking your drive going to do? You cant move anyway if there is a traffic queue?

Cycling on pavements can be inconsiderate and may cause inconvenience or fear for pedestrians, contributing to a hostile environment which reduces the mobility of vulnerable or disabled people such as the elderly and visually impaired. Such behaviour may ultimately cause injury or death, though such extremes are very rare and the risks exaggerated.

     

    Bicycles are considered vehicles under British law and is illegal to ride a bike on a pavement which has not been designated as a cycle way. Cycling on pavements is therefore illegal, punishable by a fine. The maximum penalty is £500, but it is often dealt with by a £50 fixed penalty notice.

    Well done for continuing with this topic.

    Your picture on Barton Road is particularly interesting to me.

    I live just along from there and my front door basically opens on to the the street.

    My young dog enthusiastically rushes onto the street through the door when we go for a walk, albeit on a lead. I sometimes back out through my door with a wheelie bin.

    Several close calls with hurtling cyclists mean I now have to change my behaviour and use the green cross code just to walk out of my house and on to the pavement.

    I dread to think what conversation might ensue if I were to be the 'cause' of an accident.

    I know this problem repeats throughout the city, but Barton Road is a particular hotspot, primarily because many cut through passed Sainsbury's via Station Road, which is all fine, as long as they stick to the roads!

    I should point out, I am a regular pedestrian, motorist, and cyclist.

    I smugly make sure I abide by all laws, well, especially when cycling anyway.

    When I encounter cyclists on the pavement on Barton Road I refuse to get out of the way, and occasionally this results in verbal abuse.

    This must be a real nightmare, imagine if you just walked out of your house without really looking but causing a cyclist to swerve off the footpath to avoid you into the path on an innocent motorist on the road. I wonder who the authorities would try to blame?

    I mentioned a while ago, and I'm not sure how many people remember, if someone could confirm for me.

    I'm sure a few years back an elderly lady, who was visiting the city for the day, was struck by a cyclist in Commercial Street, and she subsequently succumbed to her injuries. Can't remember what happened to the cyclist, certainly nothing like the furore surrounding the recent case in London. At the time the police said they were going to crack down on cyclists in the pedestrianised parts of High Town.

    I see little evidence of this, with the exception of a few posters, aimed at cyclists, pointing out that CCTV is in operation! Big deal.

    A cyclist who was warned about riding on a city street has been jailed after knocking down a woman who died later.

    Darryl Gittoes, 21, hit Mary Evans, 73, in Hereford city centre last July and she died in hospital nine days later, the Crown Prosecution Service said. 

    Gittoes, who pleaded guilty to causing bodily harm by wanton or furious driving, was jailed for 12 months. 

    The defendant, of Homestead, Hereford, was riding a defective bike recovered from a scrap metal lorry, the CPS said. 

    His bike was examined and found to have had no brakes, a deflated rear tyre, a cracked front tyre and no bell. 

    Gittoes was jailed at Worcester Crown Court on Monday following his guilty plea on 18 May. 

    'Tragic consequences'

    The court heard he had been warned a number of times about riding his bike along Commercial Street, where a Traffic Regulation Order prohibits cycling between 10:30 and 16:30, including on the day before the collision. 

    Emily Lenham, senior crown prosecutor from West Midlands CPS, said: "Darryl Gittoes was fully aware that his bike was not in a roadworthy condition and he knew of the prohibitions which were in force along Commercial Street, however, on 30 July 2014 he disregarded the previous warning he had received from the police and rode his bicycle along this street and in doing so, he collided with Mary Evans, knocking her to the ground. 

    "Mrs Evans would later die due to the head injuries caused by the collision.

    "This case clearly highlights the dangers of riding a cycle in a pedestrian area and the tragic consequences of Mr Gittoes' actions should serve as a reminder to cyclists to take heed of prohibitions in place within such areas, which are necessary to preserve the safety of pedestrians."

    There will be family members, and representatives of from the SAS, British Legion and Salvation Army. Local school children will lay poppies and refreshments will be provided at the Lads Club, everyone is welcome.

  13. It is sad that all cyclists seem to get the blame for the actions of a minority. But you are right if there was a bit of enforcement there would less problems

     

    I agree AV however, I do see many cyclists riding on the pavements, riding across pedestrian crossings without getting off their bikes and ignoring traffic lights. I actually saw a lad today on his mobile phone while riding on the path, the law should be applied to all road users, I also think cyclists should have some sort of insurance.
