  1. I bet the Hereford Times will gloss over the dark threat to Herefordshire from dark chicken death camps. The article in the Guardian reminds us of the relationship with our council and the disgusting way we treat our animals. I quote a short extract but please find time to read the whole article: http://www.monbiot.com/2015/05/19/fowl-deeds/ The dust such operations raise is an exquisite compound of aerialised faeces, chicken dander, mites, bacteria, fungal spores, mycotoxins, endotoxins, veterinary medicines, pesticides, ammonia and hydrogen sulphide. It is listed as a substance hazardous to health, and helps explain why 15% of poultry workers suffer from chronic bronchitis. Yet, uniquely in Europe, the British government classifies unfiltered roof vents on poultry sheds as the “best available technologyâ€. If this were any other industry, it would be obliged to build a factory chimney to disperse the dust and the stink. But farming, as ever, is protected by deference and vested interest, excused from the regulations, planning conditions and taxes other business must observe. Already, Herefordshire County Council has approved chicken factories close to schools, without surveying the likely extent of the dust plumes either before or after the business opens. Bage Court Farm is just upwind of the village of Dorstone.
  2. Dazza I think The Independents were shocked by the energy of the IOC's. Im sure Matthews in his day was a force but we couldnt even get an updated logo for this election. A meeting was held to try and update the website but just not possible- it looks like something from North Korea and has no updated information. I think the biggest disappointment felt by 3 of us is the poor help that us new candidates received. Even ten minutes with an experienced canvasser would have helped us but none forthcoming. The Independents are not a ship- there were 2 meetings before the election where we were given anti- Conservative data and then told what was wrong about the IOC- but it was difficult to find what the groups policies were. There are some honourable Independents but there are more disappointed ones. I intend to join the IOC.
  3. Im almost reluctant to step on such anger and disgust but like Amanda I did not stand to become an egocentric councillor. I stood because the Independent leader could find no one else and when he told me there would be no opposition to the Conservative, Dave Greenow I decided to take the plunge. Had I have known there was an excellent local IOC candidate I would have reached a different decision. There has to be one main opposing "block" to the Conservatives and I will for one be throwing my weight behind the strongest group - The IOC. I hope once the disappointment and anger has subsided we can all move forward. Not even sure a dog with a blue badge would be safe in Hagley!
  4. Take the leaders of the Independents and the IOC to Frome to learn some lessons: "It's a beautiful day in Frome, Somerset today - the sun is shining. But that's not the real reason it is a beautiful day. Today the results of the town council elections were announced. There has been so much despondency and trepidation expressed in England since the general election result, a feeling among so many that mainstream politics fails to represent them or their concerns, a genuine fear we are becoming a less caring, less understanding, less tolerant Britain. But in Frome today we achieved something that might sound small but is a momentous resistance to this. Today we found out that, building on their success in the last local election when they took control of the town council, a group of dedicated local people interested in promoting a responsive and responsible culture in our town instead of party political agendas who gather together under the banner ofIndependents for Frome, won a landslide victory taking ever single town council seat in the election. EVERY. SINGLE. SEAT. No Labour, no Lib-Dems, no Tories, no racist UKIP - not a single seat for a national party. On the same day that our national political system offered so many so little Frome voted for ordinary people giving up their time to make a difference to run our town and not the political class. EVERY. SINGLE. SEAT. Let it start here and spread everywhere."
  5. Well put Chris. Please explain that to Bob.
  6. Disgraceful that one Independent should stand against another. Pray for Karma
  7. As a loser in the Hagley Ward may I add a few words to the Independent/IOC working together? I stood to defeat a Conservative but ended up having to fight against a local IOC candidate as well. As we both got over 600 votes to the Conservative's 749 the logic is that if one had withdrawn then the Conservative would have lost. I had hoped that the two leaders of the groups would have got together to select only one candidate but I have been told by IOC sources that the Independents have declined to work with the IOC. The inevitable division allowed a Conservative victory. However, I now feel that the future lies with the IOC if they hold their nerve. They have a clearer ethos, are more of a team and are more modern in their approach eg social media. Their support of successful and unsuccessful candidates was commendable today. They need to get their name better known long before general elections and sustain it. Im confident that it can be done. Their priority must be to become better known in Herefordshire. I dont see the IOC putting two of their own candidates in the same ward. The future lies with a well organised party that can keep its message in the minds of local people. Good luck.
  8. As Whitecross is a PFI school the Council is committed to a minimum number of students per year group- seems they are keen to make sure numbers don't fall.
  9. Amanda and Paul I am happy to publically apologise if its true the the IOC dont take donations from companies especially linked to property development. I may have been misled by some members of our group. I shall speak to them!
  10. Can IOC please confirm that businesses are not donating to their funds as stated above. As part of the Independent group I have been told that a number of Hereford businesses and developers contribute. I am not stirring but this is what we were told. Also it is sad that I keep being told by residents that the IOC have told them that the IOC are Independents. As far as I was aware the I in IOC stands for Its. The IOC is a party with an emblem and should not be describing themselves as independent. We should fight on real issues and not pretend to be what we are not. The real enemy of this county is the party in blue - its a shame that the Independents and the IOC are fighting in each other in many wards.
  11. Cheers Colin- separating the dog sounds like cruelty itself.
  12. As the good shepherd is in my ward I would be interested in knowing if there is any truth in this story. I cannot find it in the Hfd Times onlineor the IOC FB. Thanks
  13. Both seem to me to be inward looking- UKip wanting to turn inwards- away from Europe and IOC defining itself by a small geographical area too.
  14. I suppose it was the images of the IOC van and the UKIP truck that struck a chord...or maybe it was some points of political similarity. By the way could someone form IOC tell me how their party is funded, Cheers broke Mike
  15. Have to say this is one of the best threads on this site. So good to see real problems being aired. Though I am not seeing the terrible housing neglect in Hagley and poverty on the scale that Chris has described I have been shocked at the number of elderly who are trapped in their homes lacking nursing-home care, access to doctors and dentists (unless they can afford taxis), transport to day centres etc. We need caring councillors to address these issues. Well done The Voice for focusing on this.
  16. Anyone notice an an alarming similarity between UKIP posters and IOC material??
  17. If elected i promise to engage using all methods including social media!
  18. Amanda I can feel your heart and soul in this. My daughter lives in Moor Street and parking is getting more difficult. Hereford is a very unfriendly city for cyclists. We can change some local habits but through traffic is still being directed along the A49. What are your feelings on the "Relief" road/bypass?
  19. I just came across this header for a job at the Council - with such "speedy links to any major city" surely we need a speedy system in the City! "Herefordshire Council is not just about fantastic work challenges but also about the quality of life we offer our employees, thanks to our beautiful location. Nestled on the edge of the Brecon Beacons and with speedy transport links that will take you to any major city in the UK"
  20. Good! So you cannot confirm that IOC is about to change its name to Its Our Country?
  21. Only joined this group a few hours ago but wondered if I had accidentally joined the Its Our County party (with honorary membership for Glenda V-P). As an Independent candidate for Hagley this would not look too good! Good though to see some articles with some bite.
