H.Wilson 351 Report post Posted April 17, 2017 I see a notice in Thorntons window today announcing that the shop is closing this month, sad to see another shop closing down.
adamski 37 Report post Posted April 17, 2017 That is a shame, old high street name going, and another empty premises in town. However, the writing's been on the wall for them for a long time. They diluted their brand some time ago, when they started selling on supermarket shelves.
megilleland 609 Report post Posted April 17, 2017 52 office and retail premises advertised on the Council's Commercial premises register. When people are paying tax on their earnings and then VAT on purchases not much left to support local business. People are forced to be frugal in these austere times courtesy of our local and national governments.
Colin James 1,926 Report post Posted April 17, 2017 I have updated your photo (as promised) with one I took earlier. The branch closes April 22nd. If is a shame but if I am totally honest, I cannot remember the last time I was in this store.
AndyS2992 7 Report post Posted April 17, 2017 Weird. Just yesterday I was given a Thornton's chocolate bunny as a gift and I asked if they bought it from Thornton's itself and they said no it was from Sainsbury's and I asked if Thornton's was even still in town and no one seemed to know and I said if it was then it probably wouldn't be for much longer and then this happens a day later. I'm sorry guys, I cursed it.
megilleland 609 Report post Posted April 17, 2017 Passing through Maylords this afternoon and not that Trepass outdoor shop is closing 16th June.
atm63 24 Report post Posted April 17, 2017 As a business Thorntons offering their products on super mkt shelves was probably a wise move , they could close most shops and still do well. Times change and the same has happened to other products inc the dry cleaners that was there and Argos of course . Simply placing the product where the public shop. No consolation to those losing their jobs . I can't remember the last time I went to Eign gate let alone Thorntons .
twowheelsgood 607 Report post Posted April 17, 2017 (edited) I was in there on Saturday (and there was hardly any stock on show) and the guy behind the till was telling a customer they were doing well but the landlord wanted the premises back. ragwert 362 Report post Posted April 18, 2017 It amazes me why people moan about shops closing when it's their fault in the first place.
Colin James 1,926 Report post Posted April 18, 2017 It amazes me why people moan about shops closing when it's their fault in the first place. Not seen anyone moaning in this thread only people saying it is a shame however, I think in this instance it is possibly Thorntons fault for supplying the supermarkets, so many of us are still buying Thorntons, just not from their shops. Alex 393 Report post Posted April 19, 2017 How is it people's fault that shops are closing? For not shopping in them I guess but that said, I get fed up of going into shops not finding my size clothes and being told by staff 'oh you can order online', they keep saying **** like that and they too will have no jobs! Steve Major 284 Report post Posted April 20, 2017 I purchased a box of chocolates for my mum for Mothers Day this year but I believe that is the first time I was in this shop for possibly a few years. Most products are now available in supermarkets, so they are partly responsible for their own demise.
George Armstrong 55 Report post Posted April 21, 2017 Well, that would rather suggest that Thortons have made a strategic decision to access a much bigger clientele by supplying major chain grocers and at the same time save on their wages and overheads costs by ditching their high street shops. Ferrero International SA, based in Luxembourg, own them so I can't imagine the share price has been rocked by the Hereford closure. I'm more saddened by the loss of independent local stores myself. Aylestone Voice 122 Report post Posted April 22, 2017 As far back as 2011 Thorntons announced they would be closing between 120 and 180 of its shops, so it is no big surprise.
atm63 24 Report post Posted April 23, 2017 Probably within a year or two their profits will be up due to this decision ,
