I'm getting so f$%**@g sick of this.Consequently, the items that I had due for pick up from local shops have now been cancelled and ordered elsewhere online for delivery. I'm not ******* sitting through that again.I really do pity those local trades people who have to drive around this **** hole on a daily basis. I was beyond fuming earlier bobby my dear chap. Really put a downer on my day. magicroundabout Posted March 13, 2014 Report Share Posted March 13, 2014 Silent Bull - I have just got a bike! I tried to cycle a few years ago and gave up as it was so dangerous. Having another go now but am absolutely petrified at times and very confused about cycle pathways. They stop, they start, they go nowhere at all, or not very far, motorists appear to ignore them, so cycling is a challenge. Yesterday I cycled down Union Walk toward Commercial Street, heading for Morrisons. Just before the Bus Station car park is a short strip of red and cycle logo'd cycle track across a short bit of pavement!! What is that all about? I don't know. On Station Approach travelling onto Commercial road, on the designated reddish cycle way I was obstructed by all the cars in the cycle lane! then, waiting at the traffic lights to turn right, (bravely, imo), still on the road, the front reddish coloured area with the cycle logo, was occupied by a driver. I caught her eye to be sure she could see me, as this lane leads both right and forward. I could not see her indicator - maybe she was going straight on? What to do? I waited as I didn't want to put myself at risk. Although she was not indicating, she turned right unexpectedly. It's a nightmare - why? - we're just a small city! I don't blame motorists for the dangerous state of our roads. I blame the Highways agency and council roads department - they are the bodies charged with responsibility for the roads, their upkeep and the safe direction of road users, full stop. How can we trust our offspring are safe to cycle about, when it is obvious it is very dangerous on our roads? Why is it so hard for them to do a good job, when all that expertise and money is/has been available? Judging by the constant difficulty of travelling through Hereford inner city roads, still due, at present, to one unwanted, poorly planned road alteration after another, totally ignoring the needs of the people and businesses of Herefordshire, I can see the situation getting no better in the future. More good people may go out of business before it ends then we will be left with an even more characterless ugly downbeat place. I would love to be more positive. Our money and goodwill is destined to fill up the coffers of those conglomerates coming to the Cattle market mall with all the non-existent part-time jobs and salt encrusted red brick walls with cheap tinny pointy tops! The track on the right is to allow cyclists to flow against the one way system on that bit of road. From the railway, turn left into the bus station, left at this junction and then head towards St James avoiding main roads, but not necessarily idiots who race up and down St Guthlac St at dangerous speed. You want to feel lucky..I took my lad to a job interview just outside Belmont,drove back through the traffic to Commercial Rd 30 mins later then he rang me to go and pick him up. Travelling on the pavement against the flow of the one way street. It never occurred to me!! Handy, inspirational maybe but looks a bit bluddy dangerous depending on speed! Where do you cycle when you come to the end of the pavement - the road is one-way? Surely if it's a one way street, cyclists shouldn't be going up it the wrong way? If it's ok to do so, what about motorcyclists? Mopeds? Bicycles with those little engines on? .... If you cycle the length of the track (which isn't highway and therefore isn't one way), the road that you join is two way, allowing you to carry on your merry way. Down Newmarket Street which was slow heading towards commercial road and gridlocked to a standstill heading towards the roundabout. I needed to get to the back of Maylords to pickup some heavy equipment. Noticing that the yellow box outside the kerry was jammed pack and 3 deep blocking all traffic in directions, I manage to drive up the curb near the dinosaur market and get around an open top truck. I dumped the van behind mcdonalds and decided it was easier to risk personal injury and carry the equipment from Maylords back to Union street. I then needed to get down to B&Q. The traffic was still gridlocked and after last weeks fiasco I decided not to even attempt to get back on Bath street.I heading for Goal Street carpark, shot across bath street and down towards the back of the cinema, where I picked up commercial road and head down barrs court road. In an attempt to avoid the pizza hut roundabout and Newtown road, I went for that small bridge at the back of PC World. About 1/3 in, I was met by an oncoming car, so I kindly reversed as I wasn;t sure that I would fit anyway. The bloke was on his phone, yapping away, not even a glance of thanks. I squeezed through the two walls, the van fit albeit after knocking the wing mirror. Avoiding the cars parked on Perseverance Road, you know, next to the empty car parks. I got my wares and headed back. It was a toss up, Holmer Road, Whitecross Road, A49S or Edgar Street. Having purchased a drink and a sandwich for the forseeable delay, I went for Edgar Street. I didn't stop on Edgar Street until next to the Richmond Club! So I'm guessing they actually fixed something with the lights?Anyway. Last week fucked me off royally. This week I factored in extreme traffic, food provisions and some creative navigational skills. I don't know what it was like this morning but it looked bad, I took a detour from the river, St Nicholas Street, wiggle through the back of M&S, past the fire station, up through Bartestree and out on the Worcester road. They went via the Blind College, Roman Road, Three Elms Road, Wordsworth Road (as Whitecross Road was gridlocked), past the Cemetary then right over the Bridge. Took them 40 minutes ... Just about to find out if he got in ... :-S He never got in. Arrived at his microphone at 14.23. He anecdotally reports that the Asda lights seem to have changed. Only allowing about 3 cars from Ross Road to go north across the bridge each phase. Also Sainsbury's lights inbound on the Whitecross Road letting the same 3 cars through per phase. I don't know if this is how they should work or whether someone has been tinkering/experimenting so as to move any potential jam from Newmarket Street to absolutely anywhere else in the City but there ... Half the problem is people doing things they aren't supposed to (like that) and half is people being forced to do things they aren't supposed to by the complete lack of traffic management.
